Broken Transfer Case & Upgrade to 4.10 gears

Here's what I'm thinking as of right now...

Going to replace seal to CV on the "new to me" front diff. Finish rebuilding the spare disco that I have. Replace all the bearings in the rear axle/diff while doing the 4.10 swap.

New fluid in both diffs and TC.

Am I missing anything?

I'm still looking at other options for rear pinion and gear... I've seen them a little cheaper on other sites...

I think you can get that 4.10 ring and pinion cheaper. Have you checked rock auto? I saw some smoking prices on USA standard 4.10s. Like half what you've got listed.

Actually, I saw them too. Rock Auto does have ring and pinion sets for the TB 8.6" axle. I was looking around at stuff a few nights ago to satisfy my own curiosity. And they were pretty cheap. Like ~80-$100 IIRC. They also have a bunch of ratios other than the standard 3, making the front diff the limiting factor on the availability various of gear ratios.

Yukons are much more. Trying to keep costs down as much as possir. Still have to find someone to install it.

just throwin this out there, but you can set up gears yourself and save some money. Harbor freight has a dial indicator that's held in good esteem by the hobby machinist guys and it's only $30. Their digital calipers are also surprisingly accurate. Beyond that it's just some compound to check the pattern on the teeth and time. I'm pretty confident you would have no trouble doing it. Plus you could make a real nice guide. lol

hell, some 4:56s might be real nice.

My understanding is that USA Standard is Yukon, the difference being that the USA Standard gears do not hit the extremely high standards that the Yukons do. I've read that the specs are still well within working tolerances, and the only expectation is that they will be a bit more noisy than the Yukons. With big tires, I've heard the noise thing is not a big deal.

So they are basically almost the same. With some specification differences. I can imagine them working the same and Yukon gears just being bought for "name" sake.

Today, I managed to get the rear axle off. I then started removing the front differential. I quickly found out that it was not gonna come off easily. So then I started removing the components necessary to take it off: the steering rack and the oil pan. It took some time to get everything off but now the front diff is removed. Since I've got the oil pan and the steering rack, what else should I do while I've got this thing apart?

Transfer case has been removed. I need to get a new gasket for between the TC and the transmission. Can't seem to find that listed on RockAuto, may have to go GM Parts or a dealer for that.

Quick question for anyone who has dropped the oil pan on these vehicles. Is there an actual replacement gasket for the oil pan available or am I to use RTV silicone?

Have to use the silicone. That's what I did when we swapped diffs.

Gordo Get The Silicone Called ( The Right Stuff) It's Good For Your Oil pan Also. This Is The Best Gasket Maker I Have Ever Used! No Chance Of Leaking If Used Properly.

Any suggestions on how/where I can get the plugs with pigtails from the TC harness? When mine broke, it took out one of the plugs. It's the green and purple 2 wire plug.

If anyone has a junk yard where they can cut one off... No luck in my area...

You may find a listing for a pigtail on Rockauto, not sure though. Otherwise, check the local dealer and if it's priced a bit high, take the part # and do an internet search. Lots of GM parts suppliers that sell a bit cheaper.

Auto parts stores and rock auto sell wire harnesses and pig tails. A quick look on rock auto, I couldn't find what you are talking about, but I'm not exactly sure what to call what you are looking for. If you go into the parts catalogue, under electrical-connectors, look in pig tails, and they have universal connectors.
