Here is where I'm stuck. Lets say this: I have 500 bucks, I decide to spend 200 on tools, pocket the rest. On the other hand I buy the BJs and TRs have the shop install the BJ, TR for a total of 400. I dont see how I'm getting ahead.

Because you buy the damned tools once and can replace tens of thousands of dollars worth of parts with those tools. Most of those tools will last your lifetime. I don't understand how anyone can't see this. You're out time, that's it.
Or lets put it this way. Lets say you have a pretty decent job, you make $20 and hour. The mechanic makes $80 an hour. You work 4 hours to pay him for one hour of his time and you're still paying for the part. A lot of jobs on this truck will take you an hour or two at most.
no matter how you look at it you come out ahead.
