I am installing the new diff with the 4.10's tomorrow evening. I am expecting to have the new rear axle in next week and ready to make the trip to Indianapolis for the Jamboree next weekend.
In your opinion, what's the best way?
I have the capability to service my AC system, so I remove the AC compressor, alternator, and the pulley above it. Also remove the fan and fan shroud. Remove the front drive shaft from the front diff and push it up out of the way the best you can. Pull the spline disconnect so that you can pull the intermediate shaft. Loosen the engine mounting bolts as much as you can without removing them completely. Lift the motor as much as possible to have better access to the lower right bolt on the diff. Remove the drivers side half shaft and then the four bolts on the diff. Pull it up and out the void from the compressor and alternator.
I have not tried it, but I think there would be room to leave the compressor hooked up but remove it from the block to move it out of the way.
Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.
