Hi guy's great site lots of info to digest. I have a 2003 LTZ SWB I6. I starting making mods to my TB about 6 months ago. I have really gained a great deal of insight from reading many of the topics.

wow! there is a lot to take in and this is my first build. I have missed some pretty obvious stuff, but was pointed in the right direction. currently I am looking for a knowledgeable mechanic here in albuquerque that can help me with my build. After getting
stuck on a icy road up in Toas last winter (I have the GU6 option) and it was rather embarrassing to be honest. I really want to get either a G80 option or a after market locker. my search is on for a ext 8.6" from a ext, thanks for welcoming me I appreciate that!

Welcome

If you're gonna spend the money, don't waste time with a G80. Just go straight to a 8.6 with a aftermarket locker

That's exactly what I am thinking as well Dustin. I have a number of leads on a 8.6" from a EXT, at least 3 recycling I have talked to on the phone keep pushing the G80 code in the rear assembly because it cost 2 to 3 times as much.

I figured the cheapest route would be to find a grade A 8.6" rear assembly in either a GU6 or GT4 and then install a 4.10 locker. Am I correct in assuming that regardless of the differential code (GU6,GT4 or GT5) a after market 4.10 locker will fit in any of these differential housings.

I know I will have to re-gear the front end. would it make more sense to get a 4.10 front diff or have my mechanic re-gear the existing one. I don't know what would be involved in re-gearing the existing front.

Also is this the appropriate place for this thread or should It be located else where in this forum?

The 4.10 is not a locker it is the gearing for the rear end. The locker is a separate component that goes in there with the gears. It has been said to not get the G80 as an option in the 8.6 rear end.

As for the front re-gearing it should be much cheaper to get the ring and pinion then an entire front differential. Anyone that would take on the job that does it for a living should be able to handle it.

All of this actually belongs in viewforum.php?f=72
