Spare Tire mounting - Interior

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

I've been trying to bounce this around in my head, but I feel as if I am missing something.

I love my spare carrier...don't get me wrong. However, I am looking for an alternative to use in my non-wheeling months. Has anyone come up with, know of, or seen a way to mount spare tires on the inside similar to the way Jeep Cherokees have it mounted?

I seem to recall some guys have put them on the side and used a ratchet strap between the cargo anchors.

Get your tape measure out. Is the floor to ceiling in the cargo area 32 inches? How about from the back seat to the hatch? And the mouth of the Hatch area? I think most people don't put the tire inside, because it don't fit. :poke:


AND you have a roof basket... Put on your big girl panties and lift that tire up there... :gimp:

I just went and checked again ( pretty sure I had checked before) and it looks like a 33 will fit.
I have about 34" when I check level from the bottom of the open hatch window to the seat back and I think about 36 from the floor to ceiling. Where I checked is a couple inches from the top of the seat back and there is a small amount of taper back but I think at that point you are higher than the widest point. I didn't think to check at the time how high up from the floor the measurement was. I'll try to get that measurement if I get a chance.

I have put 4 33s side by side back.there for sure. Pretty sure i stuck 4 35s without rims there too.
I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...but
they've always worked for me.

My favorite part of having the spare on the insideof my S10blazer was putting a slush covered muddy tire inside the truck when I had a flat while driving to work.
Just something to think about.

Dave - I'm not about putting it on the roof basket...drag...look...etc. I also made this thread not to point out the obvious (as you did) but to see if anyone has made a mounting rig or came up with a practical way to mount a tire in there. Thanks though.

Navigator - Okay I'll work around in there.

Karo - How do you have that secured in there? I can't tell - just as Navigator has it?

v7 - My rear is destroyed - mostly by the previous owner's dog. I have a GMC Envoy plastic liner in there now to cover it, but will most likely remove the rear altogether and build an enclosure for gear.

I used to have the spare in the cargo area of my TB. If you stand it up between the side tie down spots, you can use a ratchet strap to hold it in place. You'll just get a little rubbing on the headliner near the tailgate door.

Nice! Okay. I mean, this wouldn't be super permanent...just more so for the wintertime and until I figure out what my ultimate intentions/goals are with the rear end and rear interior.

I've been thinking of building a platform that my tire can slide under with some storage on the sides and fasten it to the floor. With it fastened the tire can slide in and won't need to be secured with the hatch closed. It would also allow me to quickly remove the tire if I need to get in the lower compartment. It would also allow me to add a few more tie downs to secure gear if needed.

That would be great - I just wonder how practical it would be with a tire that is something like a 32 or what not. Building a platform to accomidate that size wouldn't allow for much storage boxes above as they'd block vision.

yeah, I have thought about that some, you would lose about a foot in height in floor space.
For most everyday stuff it wouldn't be a big deal for me.
For my camping trips I have a roof rack and cargo carrier that I can get most things on. Before I had the roof rack when I went camping I couldn't see out the back glass anyway.

If it got to be too big of a pain when camping I could remove the platform and strap it on the side like Karo posted.

Once or twice there has been discussion* about removing the OEM spare tire carrier and its support so that a hole could be cut in the rear floor and a tray deep enough for the spare tire (laying flat - not upright like Karo posted) lowered into the hole. Then carpet a piece of 3/4" plywood and lay it over the spare. Has anybody done this? Made the tray from scratch or adapt something else?

* Maybe it was on the OS or GMTnation, I cannot remember.

That would be a pain in the ass, get a flat on the trail and have to unpack the entire cargo area just to get to spare. I use to carry my spare on the roof and that was no fun to get up and down but I would put back on the roof before I buried it under my gear.

See out the rear? haha. Try having a 40" spare to haul around, only place it fits is on the back covering the rear window. Unless you fold down both rear seats, then it will fit inside.

With my 35 on the drivers side of the bumper, I really lost little visibility. Really glad we went that way and not the middle or passenger side.
