Have you figured out which head?

It just started consuming last week, i filled it, drove it a couple days, not many miles, saw it was empty again, checked the oil, saw the water, and parked the truck, so I'm not worried.

It should be the right head, (bank 2). I replaced the left head (bank 1) and the gaskets in 2009 when it needed valves and a SFI unit. If i wasn't a broke highschool kid at the time, I would of replaced the other head, and gasket at the same time.

Make sure you soak a shirt in the used gear oil while replacing the fluid. I find it aromatic and it will increase your general peaceful out look on the world.

Yeah, that stuff comes out of there like uncontrollable vomit. I think next time I'll keep the plug over the hole while it drains and try to control the flow a little better.

Truck winterization finished today.

Both diffs and TC fluids done.
Engine air filter cleaned, cabin filter changed.
TB cleaned.
Seafoam.
Trans checked.
Coolant checked.
PS checked.
Replaced #2 coil pack to try and get rid of the mysterious random P0302.
Pulled the bugout bags to check food expiration dates and make sure things are as they should be.
Inventoried spares.

Waiting on the mail for a new O2 sensor and front brakes. Finally ran through my second set of front pads (115K miles) so I bought the rest of the parts I need to convert to EXT front brakes. When I do that I'll draw all the fluid out of the system and replace it.

Also did the wife's oil/checked other stuff. Then looked forlornly at my blown up Toyota.

Welp, I got my engine taken apart today. Turns out one of the 2 intake gaskets was the culprit for the leaking anitfreeze. The gasket around one of the ports on the driver side head was all messed up so water was just leaking down into the cylinder and the block. Kinda bummed, that gasket is only three years, 33,000 miles old. Since i have it apart, I am doing the head gaskets too. One has 253,000 miles on it, the other, 33,000.

Got the truck all back together on Sunday. Still haven't gotten the dang timing perfect yet. I need to change the oil and fill it with anti-freeze today, and play with the timing some more. This truck is good to wrench on, but everytime i have to take the distributor out, it's a PITA to get the timing perfect again.

I have one, Doesn't help much because my truck's timing is still computer controlled and the timing advance is controlled and constantly adjusted by the PCM. I even have scan gauge software for my laptop and can watch the timing in real time, but it doesn't help me get the distributor right.

Right now i have the truck running pretty well, it just idles rough and stumbles a little bit when you throttle up.

Pull the advance connector. It's on the firewall.

Thanks for the video, but it doesn't help me. That video is for 88-95 TBI trucks. The 96-98 trucks have SFI. The timing on my truck is completely computer controlled. BUT the cam sensor is on the Distributor, so even tho the distributor doesn't really change the timing (turning the distributor doesn't change when the timing light flashes), By setting the distributor, you're effectively "calibrating" the cam sensor so the PCM knows when to fire the injectors.

I wasn't sure what year your truck was, so I took a stab based on your username.

You need a scan tool that reads cam retard to truly get it "right". Looked to see if Torque will read that value?

If you haven't already, I'd just pull the #1 plug and find TDC with a screwdriver, then set the dist in. Are the dist's in that year range hex or slot on the oil pump drive?

That's what I've been doing. My oil pump is a slot drive. Half of me says it's not running right because the valves are too tight, BUT i'm getting the code for the Cam/Crank sensors being out of sync. So i know it's timing related. My neighbor is bringing over his snap on computer tonight, he helped me get it right last time.

Edit: FYI my username is my name for most things. When i got my first email address in grade school, I was a big Dale Jarret fan, hence the #88. My truck is a 97.

Update, My neighbor concluded it is not a timing issue, he got the distributor more correct than i did. It is still running rough. He said it's running on 7 or less cylinders. Tomorrow I'm going to figure out which one(s). Ya take your old fashioned circuit checker (the screw driver style with a light bulb in the handle and a ground wire), clip the wire to metal, and stab each spark plug boot with it. Normally, the truck will run worse because you are grounding out a cylinder. When you stab the bad cylinder's plug wire, the truck won't run any worse. His and my guess is i cracked/damaged a spark plug while working on/handling the heads. Just gotta figure out which one.
