whining noise from engine

Something not working right?

by dillonwalt » Tue Sep 25, 2012 7:20 am

I have been hearing an overbearing whining noise coming from under the engine while driving and at idle. I have heard that it could be the power steering pump but it doesn't get louder while turning. Also heard it could be a pulley. Any ideas or techniques to find out what pulley if that is the case?

does it sound kind of like an airplane and is it only when you first start up or is it pretty much all the time?

I've heard a mechanic's stethoscope can be handy for determining the source.

The idler pulley is so easy to change out and so cheap, it's worth doing that even if it's not the source.

How many miles on the truck?

My idler pulley was one of the first parts to go for me that wasn't related to trail abuse. They fail far too often, being cheap. Tension pulley being the next most common fault, then PS pump, alternator, and AC clutch pulley. Pre-2005 fan clutches are also in the middle of the list, but post-2005 redesigned ones have a better track record.

Question, can you put a post-2005 fan clutch on a pre-2005 TB? Myabe an 05 on a 04?

My power steering pump was making a whining noise awhile back and it didn't get any louder while turning it just stayed the same all the time. I flushed the power steering fluid and put in synthetic fluid from Amsoil and I haven't had any issues yet. From what I could tell I replaced what looked like the factory fluid, it certainly needed replacing.

I heard it could be the Vortec intake...but I find that unlikely.

Only if it's whistling through a tornado disk.

well its pretty much all the time and my maintenance savvy friend said it could be the idler pulley; replacing the power steering fluid probably isnt a bad idea either. The truck has about 110,000 on it and I am really just starting to crack into it it very well may be the factory fluids
