Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

finally took apart my 4wd disco

Something not working right?

by the_asian_TB » Mon Dec 05, 2011 11:50 pm

i have been without 4wd for about 3 months now. worst 3 months ever. i finally met up with Donny to get some advise. he thought it was the disco so by his recommendation i opted to go with the awd sleeve. took apart the disconnect today which was not fun to get out by the way.

Once i opened it up definitly could tell that i needed to do something. the grease was as black as you can get. :fro:

I was expecting to have all the components to be worn out and not to be usable. but as i pulled them out one by one. they all seemed to be fine. which was really weird. no bearing wear. my fork was fine. everything was in good shape.

i believe that the reason it wasnt working before was that the grease was so old that it wasnt doing its job. but i put in all the new parts anyways. new seals. new bearings. the awd sleeve. everything.

i feel that if i had just taken it apart and cleaned it out and put new grease into it that it would have worked fine. instead of spending close to 140 dollars i would have just spent the 9 dollars on grease.

just a word of advice for people that run into thinking their disco is bad. take it apart before you go spending money.

Khang, sounds like you got lucky on the wear. Most of us aren't, especially when lifted.

The AWD sleeve will really be a helpful element against future wear. It helps support the outer two bearings, and shares the load with the inner bearing. You shouldn't have to rebuild this thing for a long time now, so if nothing else, you should have good peace of mind now.

I just replaced my disconnect last week. I wish I knew about the awd sleeve... Just a question about that. Does that mean it would only be awd all the time, or can you still select 2hi and 4hi?

It just removes the moving bits from your splined disconnect... you can still select 2Hi/4Hi/4Lo.
