Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

gonna start upping the power....

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

by 06MidnightBlue » Mon Aug 08, 2011 11:25 pm

need some opinions on air intakes...I'm considering either the K&N FIPK kit or the Volant kit?

Also considering upgrading the MAF sensor...however in the past I've known this to be pointless...anyone done it to their TB yet?

Equally considering the JET Stage 1 Module...any opinions on this as well?

Thanx :thumright:

Don't do Jet. A buddy nof mine did it on his H3 and within the month the truck "learned" what the chip was tryingto do and "reversed" it. Go with PCMforless.com and get the PCM flashed. As far as the MAF, I'll sit back and wait for one of the vets to chime in... :coffee:

Your best bang for the buck is a PCM tune. I think you would be wasting money with the MAF sensor as well.

There's a thread over on the OS that to get the biggest bang is to get your head (or something) ported. The thread is by the guys who run turbos on our engines or put them in different trucks.

Their names are limequat and efi-diy.

:Iagree: MAF is pointless. Intake and exhaust are marginal at best. For the money and time involved, a tune is your best bet. If power is your quest, however, a header and a ported head are the most effective. With a properly ported head and a full exhaust from stainless works(including header), you can easily gain 50 hp over stock, and that is before the tune. Our engines have very restrictive intake and exhaust ports and increasing flow to the motor without opening up those ports actually has adverse effects.

If you have to get an aftermarket filter/intake, get the AirRaid "dry" filter... It only lets like 3x the dust in as your stock filter... The K&N lets in between 60x and 120x as much dust as your stock filter... For the street guys, this isn't a HUGE problem, but for us who follow each other down gravel and dirt roads to get to the trails, this can be a big problem as far as how long our engine has good compression...

FWIW, the 400HP TBSS has the same air filter that the rest of us have, and isn't appreciably restricted by it...

I've always thought that a filter that allows more air also allows more dirt.

More air per surface area typically allows more dirt, and K&N usually has less surface area than stock, and still flows more air... The oil does help, but it can't help to its full potential if the holes are too big, or the material is too thin... Oiled foam filters usually do OK, though...

I had the complete K&N drop-in system and hated it after a month because it made talking difficult.

I think they should also list the filter in terms of microns... it must be that they are lazy or embarrased by it.
May be just as easy to put two stock filters in parallel with each other if more flow is needed, which is a crazy idea.

Yeah, if it's with the super shaky camera man, that would be the one. It was one of my first tests on the trail. Anyway, back to the local programming...
