Shuddering

Something not working right?

by Blask3 » Wed Jan 05, 2011 8:13 am

When I am driving I get a shuddering sound and a vibration in the front end. I do not think it is a warped rotor or anything related to the brakes. Is it possible that it could be something with the axle or the transfer case?

Could be any number of things. There's some extra information that we need.

Does the frequency change with vehicle speed, or engine speed?

Is there a resonant speed that the amplitude is higher?

What is the approximate frequency (how many times does it shudder a second)?

Do you only notice it when in gear and driving?

Is there anything you do that makes it worse? IE: Turning, braking, accelerating?

I would really make sure your wheel adaptors and/or wheels are on tight...

The sound accelerates when the vehicle does, it is only there whe the vehicle is in motion not at idle. Turning makes it vibrate in the steering. It slows to a stop when I brake and the vehicle stops.

As far as the wheels, I don not have adapters but I will make sure the wheels are on tight.

Hard to diagnose without checking the components, but I had both of these symptoms in the past.

Vibe in the steering wheel that I could also feel in the floor = Bad Wheel bearing.

Shuddering with a vibration noise in the front = Bad CV joint.

These are only my personal experiences.

I am going to look at the cv joint because I think the boot may have ripped apart. I imagine that it is dry and probably needs to be fixed.
