I am getting a strange whining noise when the truck is running. People have said that it is the power steering, but the pump was replaced not long ago and the fluid is full. I have heard that it could be the fan clutch. Anyone have any helpful input?
If its related to RPM's then it most likely the idler pulley. Just replaced mine a few weeks ago b/c I was hearing a 'supercharger' type whine related to RPM's.
These problems really can be found quickly on the OS. I solved mine on my own in about 10 min.
Build Thread Back to stock, had fun while it lasted...
It is a supercharger type whine and it is related to the RPMs. When I accelerate it gets louder and it gets quiet when the truck shifts or I let off the gas. I am going to replace the Idler Pulley and see if that fixes the issue.
If that doesn't work, you could consider a possible alternator failure in the future. Do you have any additional loads on the charging system? Stereo, lighting, etc..
Harbor Fright has cheap mechanics stethoscopes to assist localizing the noise, or you can use a long dowel or piece of rebar. I got the stethoscope recently on sale for about $3, I think, but I used to use my specific favorite length of rebar that I also use to pound on CV shafts for extraction.
All I have on the charging system are my emergency light for the fire department and those are only on when I turn them on.
As for the AC clutch I have no clue. I am going to spend the $20 to replace the pulley and see if that solves the problem. If it doesn't then I will have to look into it further. I hope the pulley is the problem so I dont have to put alot of money into it. I have other projects to do.
