Offroad selector switch

Has anybody had any problems with thier selector switch? Right now, mine won't select four low at all, and sometimes it will randomly switch to A4WD. I figure I can get a replacement ordered while I am over here, just wanted to check to make sure if anyone else has had this problem or not.

The contacts can get dirty if it's not exercised regularly. You can turn it CW and CCW 100 times or so and try to clean them up. But replacements are cheap, even at the dealer. Happens often.

What happens with 4LO? You in neutral when attempting the mode change?

Oh man I hope I'm not dumb...but I'm pretty sure that I have been in neutral when trying to get it. I can't remember...I am sure though that I tried all kinds of things...neutral, drive and reverse. I think the "fix" I did last time with foil is starting to wear out. I lost the metal pin inside and replaced it with foil. I checked ebay for replacement they are cheap...I was just wondering if is a common problem or not.

Most of everything I have seen or read about concerning the four wheel drive selector switch was mainly with 02's Although there has been some issues with 04's. Honestly I would just replace it. It's pretty inexpensive and would give you peace of mind but that is just my opinion.

Do you get the Service 4WD light to appear?

no 4WD service light. I am leaning towards buying a new one. They are like 35$ on ebay. I assume that they are all the same part?

You might find it cheaper than that at the dealer since the redesign. Check the OS or www.compnine.com for the correct part number for a 2005 or 2006+ vehicle. Sorry, I haven't memorized that one. (I carry two spares typically.)

After researching for a part number I found it and ordered one online. I just got it in today, and I hope they just changed the way they look. My original on said 2hi, Awd, 4hi, 4lo. But the new one has arrows instead of hi and lo.

Is Neutral selectable on the new switch?

I shouldn't say this, but my '02 still has the original switch, and it's never given me a problem.

All NP226 vehicles (with a LO range) can be put in neutral. Only the legend changed from old to new switch, not the functionality.

Thanks for posting this issue. I recently bought a used 2003 TB LS 4x4 at about 115,000 miles from a well known dealership in MD. It was a one owner vehicle and the owner took great care of the TB. I checked out the carfax report and also called the dealerships that he had the TB serviced at. So I'm very happy with the TB so far.

However, the TB didn't come with an owner's manual and so I'm not sure exactly if the selector switch is working. When I select different options there isn't any ligt or any type of confirmation that a different selection has been made. So I try to test it out and go to this hill that's probably about 7 feet tall and maybe a 30 to 35 degree incline with about 10ft. distance from the base to the top.

Anyways, it's a grass hill and I try to climb it. The rear wheels start spinning so I select at 4AWL option. Same problem, wheels spin and I don't feel that power is being transferred to other wheels. Same story with 4HI and 4LO. So of course I'm pissed off because this isn't even an off road situation. It's not real off roading and I can't get up this measly little hill!

Any thoughts or suggestions on what I'm doing wrong here? I would have definitely made it up had I not come to a complete stop but I wanted to try it from a complete stop. Thanks!

When sitting idling, with windows down and radio off, you should hear actuators working when you switch from 2hi to 4hi and back. If you don't, then something is broken and we must investigate further. Also... grassy hill + street tires +35 degree incline + open diff = no traction, whether in 4wd or not. Ask me how I know...

I'd say if you want to test it have someone outside who can see if the front tires receive power or not. Also, go check the documents section at the OS (www.trailvoy.com), there's a PDF version of the manual there.

And there's a specific procedure for switching into neutral, it's on the manual (I'm not sure what the procedure is, but it is there).
