I expect the average person would be just as happy with either the TB or the GC.
My son has an XJ which I love and it is easy to work on.
The biggest problem with it is it isn't nearly as comfortable as the TB.
I'm only about 5'9 and I bump my head when I get in it.
I understand the GC is more comfortable than the XJ.
I also expect for the average off roader the unibody GC/XJ would be fine. There are a lot of them out there.
They seem to hold together fine as long as you don't start cutting on the body.
I mean if you read very much most folks talk about "keeping up with jeeps" for a reason.
There is also much more aftermarket support for them. We have support for some lockers, bumpers, skids, spacers, lifts etc but they have a much wider range.
I also think the drive train is simpler which might be more reliable. Cash for clunkers killed a lot of them so there are lots of parts in the bone yards.
I guess it just depends on if you want to be another Jeep or drive something cool
