Rear Bumper+ Tire Carrier

Any special projects involving a decent amount of fab work (bumpers, sliders, roof racks, etc)

by Hpimichael02 » Mon Jan 24, 2011 3:50 pm

hey guys,

i have a couple this in the fire but this is #2 on my list...

so i have plans on building a rear bumper + tire carrier, after the body lift i dont want to cut the frame and such so ima keep everything down at normal level and build around it and brace everything to that so it will be all one piece...

here is a crap picture of the base product super simple of the bumper

Image

the circles will be reverse/ rear fogs and the square will be my tow hitch....

a 3D design will be ready tonight and the templates on the truck tomorrow and maybe start cutting the metal wed

the bottom piece that says top shelf will be the shelf on the bumper as a step

I like it.

Good luck. On paper it looks simple... but let me give you a piece of advice... start with the frame mount. Once you get that designed, start to build out. Everything falls into place that way.

James: thanks for that advice...ill def start with that area...

ive been drawing it up while at work today ... and on break measureing here and there.. i have all the materials at home from my brother body drop so im set with that... but i think the hardest part is mounting the tire carrier to the frame and keeping everything super strong ....

its easy to make a janky POS but hard to make something strong and beautiful

Foam board tends to have more rigidity and is usually thicker. I recommend this.

I have usually used cardboard for templates, foam board can work but not always as sturdy when you go to trace it out. Are you using it for mock-up also?

FWIW, you'll want to leave ~3/8-1/2" between your bumper and the body... You don't notice it with the plastic facias, but the frame/bumpers move slightly seperately from the body; so you'll want to give a little bit of breathing room there, so you don't rub the bumper on the body.

Looks like a pretty cool design! Keep the progress updates coming as you work on this.

What are you doing for the tire carrier? One of those DIY hinge kits?

it might be duel tire carrier- a fold sideways and down(fold side ways to clear the tail gate on one side .. that as of yet has to be designed but it will be going straight through and welded and bolted to the actual frame on each frame rail-

i will be trying to finish it tonight wheather permitting

now i have a couple thicknesses of metal at the house what should i use?

now keep in mind im kepeing the factory rear hitch and towing capabilities, so all towing mounts will be to that so there will be only wind drag on it and the rear occasion of tree bumping.. so im think .25" is kinda to think for this application- what do you think ... ll happily change the thickness

If you're not replacing the hitch, 3/16 is plenty...

Pretty sure he's going down with the TB. Was selling all his stuff in the classifieds. So I'll guess and say that it had not been done.
