Well, I've discovered something rather... unexpected. I'm not sure whether or not I'm mad.
I installed the ATP 111002 (AWD disconnect assy)about 2 years ago. It had a good seal and grease from factory so I never opened it. I cracked it open today to inspect and regrease and found something that confused me at first... See if you can spot what's wrong with this "AWD" unit!
That's right, folks. The 111002 contains the normal fork/gear combination as a standard splined disco. Only difference is the inboard half of the case has a raised plug where the fork sits (where the actuator mounted), essentially doing the "redneck awd mod" that a few have done.
Initially I was furious. But then I was trying to figure out why I was mad... The purpose of the change was for an upgrade in durability, and I've beat the shit out of this rig and it never failed. I didn't even notice it was different until 2+ years later when I opened it for normal maintenance. I suppose once you take out the fork syncing the gears of different speed, which is the destructive action, this is just as reliable.
So I guess this post is just to inform people that if you DO purchase the ATP 111002 "AWD" disco, this is what is actually in there. Seems like the only difference between ATP 111001 (4wd) and 111002 (AWD) is the outer case. Hmmm.
Greased up and back in!
PS: My big tip is every time you install a CV, coat both splines w/ anti-seize (if you're not, already). When I removed mine today, I didn't need a single tool to free it from the disco. 2 or 3 pulls on the tripod housing, it popped loose. great success
