Rear Axle Brake Shield Replacement

The axle that I ended swapping into my TB about a month ago didn't really have brake shields. The left side was rotten and the right side was non existent. I figured to swap them to my new axle off my old axle during the swap, but I ran into a hiccup. I removed the wheels, brakes, half-shafts, and e-brake assembly (25) but the brake shield still stayed on. I pulled/ hammered as hard as I could (not much because the shield is so thin). Am I missing anything?

You dont need those brake sheilds

I find rust makes them shitty to get completely off. Assuming the bolts are out I'd break out the chisel
build thread

Bolts 26 were removed in order to get the E-Brake Assembly number 25 (minus the brake shield)...

38, 36, 1, 27,28, 26, 25, were all removed.

Those brake shields are great at collecting rocks and gravel that grind against the rotor and make terrible noises. I cut my front shields off. Also cut all 4 off of my dads truck. They're pointless really.

I would be inclined to agree with you if they were purely disc brakes, but I am afraid that girt or gravel could get into the E-Brake Drum and chew up the shoe.

If they were there from the factory, they were probably there for a reason.

Those shields are mated with the backing plate, held on with bolts #26 and should come off.

I agree they should be there, (need) to be there.

I looked at Rockauto, but do not see them offered.

I don't need new ones, I just need to get the good ones off my old axle and the rotten ones off the new axle.

It appears that I just didn't hit it hard enough with all the rust build up over the years. I'll take a torch to it the next time I have a go at it and see if that helps to loosen it up at all.

FYI you can get these off of Amazon -- Dorman 924-208 -- for $20/pair. When I replaced my rear axle, everyone told me to just leave off the dust shields, so I never replaced mine. So far no problems, but I've only been running without since September.
