Something not working right?

by SaltWaterDrinker » Mon Jul 11, 2011 5:36 pm

Please forgive me for the brash attitude in this post...I'm really upset right now.

On Monday of last week, my "Service Engine Soon" light came on. After Advanced Auto Parts told me they couldn't read codes revolving around that error and cross checking with some friends, I assumed that it was simply a fluke with the computer/sensors.

I was wrong.

Before I go any further, I'd like to add that I do not feel that any of these occurrences have to do with the run I had in Wharton last Friday.

The Sunday after the Wharton run, I started my truck up after work and realised I had a high fan speed. I thought that it wasn't a big deal because it has happened before and usually slows down after a minute or two - this time, it did not.

About five minutes into my drive, I noticed that I had significant acceleration loss, and then "Reduced Engine Power" started chiming.

I went over to Dave's that night and he suggested that it may be the Fan Clutch that went bad. Makes sense; all the symptoms match that.

Then this afternoon, the A/C failed and blew out hot air.

So to sum it up:
1.) "Service Engine Soon" comes on.
2.) Then high fan speed accompanied by the "Reduced Engine Power" light.
-Assumed that it was the Fan Clutch-
3.) Air Conditioner failed to function.

Okay, lets start brain storming ideas/experiences, etc. Ready, set, go.

CORRECTION:

The Air Conditioner now works. Not as cold as usual, but it's working.

The code reader is in the (hopeful) works for tomorrow.

No spikes in temperature, it's actually much cooler since the fan is constantly running on "steroid strength."

Go to a different auto parts store. My advance and auto zone let me use the code reader for whatever. There is no need for you or anyone else to guess blindly when you can have the answer handed to you. Trust me, I know first hand. I was under the impression I needed a new engine and it turned out to be a spark plug(this was almost 4 years ago, when I was still green to self-diagnosis).

Right,

Okay. I'll look into doing that. Like I said, I've a friend who owns a shop who owes us a bunch of favours. I'll cross my fingers and hope for that. The only other parts store we have around here is Autozone...

Autozone usually works for me. Worst case, just do not say what the reader is for. It will pull and decipher the codes regardless. Get your answer and fix it before you break the truck.

Yeah there is a lot of people out there that will over charge or tell you its a bunch of shit when it's only one thing. I need a code reader bad . I actually went to Autozone today to take back some things. My check engine light has been on for a while and I used there code reader and it gave me everything I already knew..lol Point is if you have an autozone near ya its free. If ya dont, the people on this site have saved my ass a number of times and are very good at solving problems or pointing you in the right direction. Good luck keep us posted..

If you find that the reader will not pull up the codes, check fuse #13 under the hood, it may be out and this will cause a loss of power to the DTC connector.

I have a superchips handheld programmer in one of our trucks. It is vin locked to the 1997 truck it is installed in.

But, it still works as a code reader for the other 4 rigs we have. Just more options.

I've had the same problem a few times. Advanced couldn't read the code because of a blown fuse.
I think mine also powers one of the cig lighters inside the cab.

The Fan Clutch was replaced, and all issues have been rectified...thankfully.

As far as that android app goes - that's amazing. I am going to have to look into that further when funds and time become more available.

I'd like to thank everyone for their patience, understanding, advice, and experience. I am sorry for sounding like a Jerkface when I first started this thread. :fro:
