Whining

Something not working right?

by Mooseknuckle » Wed Jun 08, 2011 3:41 am

Ok I have a whining noise. When I turn the AC on it disappears turn off the AC it's whining again. It whines with thr rpm's. Not sure if it's the idler pulley or a buddy of mine said it's the ac clutch? Any how to's or advise? I looked on the OS and saw some stuff, should I replace just the AC Clutch or idler pulley first....??? Thanks!

Possibly AC compressor bearing. My idler pulley was the culprit back in the fall, that was an easy/ cheap fix, but since the noise goes on/off with the AC, its something to do with the compressor. Either can get lucky and fix the compressor or it could be shot and those suckers are not cheap... A bunch of good threads on the OS, that I read a while back.

Mine started making noise at the beginning of spring. It was driving me crazy, and haven't felt like diving into this repair right now. So I just got a shorter belt to bypass for now, but I may need to try fixing it since the hot weather is upon us.

Mine was the clutch bearing. It took me a while to figure it out. As far as I could find there is not a clutch kit for us.

The AC compressor is a bitch to replace. I have had to replace mine twice and there is not an easy way to get it out.

Damn, that's not what I like to hear... I was just about to pick a used one listed on CL for relatively cheap. It's been way too damn hot here, and I do a lot of driving for work, and very often sit around in my truck on sites, so the heat is getting to me... Otherwise I'd not bother replacing such an expensive item.

Good time to do a front lockrite/gears. That was one of the last things I had to pull on my way to the front diff.

just happened to my grandparents 2005 Envoy. It was the idler pulley. cheap and quick to fix. Although there was no correlation with the A/C or any other accessory for that matter. The wine did change with RPM tho.

Ok so I Replaced the AC compressor. Yes it was a little bit of a pain in the butt ,but not as bad a s I thought it would be. Dropped the skids tool the fan and the shroud out and it was right there. Stealership wanted about 600-750 to fix. I got a used compressor with a one year guarantee for 150. Slipped the new one on and put a new serp belt while i was in there, slapped it all back together and now she is running like a champ!

I am glad to hear that it all worked out well for you. I couldn't get my fan off, hence the huge PITA for me when I did mine. Now that you have done it can you imagine trying to snake that up and out of the top of the engine compartment? :wallbash:

You need what is called a 2 pin spreader to hold the engine from turning while you loosen the fan.

I broke two of them from Advance before I gave up and found a different way! When my water pump gave up and I had to tackle it again I ended up having to create my own tool to hold it on place to get the fan to break free from the water pump. This was also after 7 years and 200k miles with having not been removed.

Damn sorry to hear that you had problems but that is a lot of miles without having been taken apart. I used a cresant wrench a screw driver and a hammer and some beers and the fan came right off. Putting the fan back on was more of a pain in the ass than taking the fan off. But I only have 58,000 on mine.
