Secondary Air Injection System

Something not working right?

by wink » Sat Feb 12, 2011 5:02 am

I currently have two codes, P0411 and P2440. Both are for the S.A.I.S.

P0411 says system fault and lists probable causes as the relay or fuse, connector and wiring, or pump defective or hoses blocked.

P2440 says system shut-off valve stuck open and the probable cause is the air check valve assembly.

I was thinking that the P0411 code caused the P2440 code. Then I search the OS and it was stated that the P0411 code was a general idea and the P2440 was the specific problem.

Any thoughts?

Almost every wheeling trip I throw the 411 code. Then in about half dozen starts of normal diving it goes away.
I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...but
they've always worked for me.

Well I checked all the connections, and they seemed fine. Took the check valve out and gave it look. Not sure what it's supposed to look like, but it didn't seem to be stuck open. Guess I'll try a new valve and see what happens. :hissyfit:

This is from the DTC sheet:
This DTC determines if the SAI system control valve is stuck open
Phase 2 test (Pump commanded On, valve commanded closed)
SAI pressure error < -3kPa (actual pressure lower than predicted during Phase 2)

From what I can tell, it could also mean that the blower itself isn't working. I didn't see a separate DTC for that (I could have overlooked it though). Do you hear the blower working during a cold start?

Not exactly sure what to listen for, but the engine did get quieter after about 25-30 sec.

After a cold startup, get out of the vehicle and listen for the SAI itself. It should have a distinctive hairdryer type sound. The sound should come from under the driver side door area. I believe it does only run for 25-30 seconds.

You can also take off the in and output hoses from the SAI and feel the air.

So the air pump itself is located under the cab on the driver side? I'll check this out when I leave work in 10 hours.

Yep, it's tucked in beside the driver's side frame rail, somewhere forward of the gas tank.

It appears the pump isn't working. Wasn't making any noticeable noise and couldn't feel any sucking or blowing.

It still could be numerous things. A bad fuse could keep the system from coming on. The fuse should be under the hood, labeled "AIR". Make sure that's good first.

Next, check that the AIR relay is getting power. The relay receives 12V constantly when the ignition is on, the ground is switched.

It could be either a bad relay or a bad motor. You'll have to diagnose each one piece by piece.

Good luck!

Ugh, I'm in the same boat with this. Mine quit working and started throwing the 0410 code 2 days ago.
