another gage cluster prob

Something not working right?

by TBNewbie » Tue Nov 29, 2011 6:52 pm

So my cluster is flakeing out on me the fuel oil bat and temp all dropped to zero position my radio died and my windows and locks. Engine didn't even hicup so it must be just in the car. So I k ow my cluster is not the right one because it doesn't work with the steering wheel buttons but when I got my dash opened I started to see things that worried me. There are 2boxes that don't look like they belong. They are loose which doesn't match with how nicely gm usually bundles things. Does anyone know what they are. Sorry I am on my cell and don't have better access or I would do some searching.

Sorry my phone died and i didnt get to finish the post. Anyways I have pics of the 2 boxes they are boath wired into the steering wheel and the cluster. I cant see them being OEM because there are wires splices all over. Hoping someone knows what they are.

Image
This is the first one I found zip tied just to the left of the of the steering wheel.
Image
This is where it was and you can see the ground wire just to the right of the box attached with a screw
Image
This is the second one I found just loose in the empty cavity to the left of the steering wheel.
Image
Thease wires have been cut I dont think thats stock.
Image
They are all wired into the harness coming out of the steering wheel and goung to the cluster.
Image
I also noticed that they are hooked up to this switch and button. Tried them but I didnt see anything change.

I know that the cluster is not the original was told that when I bought the truck But I didnt notice till after a while that it wasnt the corect one for the truck as mine has the DIC but the cluster doesnt. Could this be some adapter or something?

Ya I think it is a remote car starter. I did some more searching last night and I looks like some of the install write-ups. Its going to be a fun uninstall.

I don't think that has anything to do with your gauge cluster though. The GMDAA is a remote control/start system. Not sure if that's integrated with the larger box, which appears to be a security system. The switches down below are probably remnants of the security system. One of my old vehicles had a security system similar to that, and you had to press the momentary switch while turning the key in order to start the vehicle. The cut wires are probably 'option control' wires for the module. Any identifying names/numbers on the larger module?

That's probably just a manufacturer serial number.

The reason I suggested it's a security system are the relays. I'm guessing one is horn, one is lights, and one is some sort of starter bypass.

I'd honestly not mess with it, as I don't think that's your problem.

Have you checked your megafuse under the hood? I'm wondering if you're getting power to your BCM.

I haven't because I thought it must be ok or else everything would not work and this is just an intermittent problem. I did order one 150 that's what you guys use not the stock 125 right. I just don't want whatever this thing is to cause any problems down the road. I think it's a car starter because if it was an alarm It wouldn't have an on/off switch.

125 is hard to find, 150 will work fine.

You didn't mention that it was an intermittent issue before. The first place I'd check is the rear fuse panel. Check to make sure the nut on the 12V supply is tight. Next time you run into the problem, check to see if there is power getting back there.
