Shifter in "Park", stuck in reverse (Fixed)

Something not working right?

by Stoked » Mon Aug 15, 2011 9:22 am

Yesterday I took the family on a trip to the keys, stopped at a million places and what not. After a VERY long day, I back the truck up into the driveway and shift it to park. The gear display still says reverse and there is no way to shift out of the park position. Doing some reseach it seems to be that the range selector cable is either broken or disconnected. Havent gotten under the truck to see whats up but thought I should run this by you guys before touching anything. On the brightside the site will have another writeup.

Yep, exactly what mine did... It probably just popped off at the transmission (what mine did), or if it didn't, you may have a broken "doughnut" thing on the shifter cable, in the console...

So, it popped of at the transmission like you said. I placed it back on but I think i need to put a retainer or something there cause it seems like it might slip off again.

maybe that little plastic clip is worn.
Did you feel it "snap" on? I've never pulled the one off of the TB but on other vehicles it takes a good amount of pressure to snap it on or pop it off.

I would likely pop it back on and see how it does for awhile before I spent too much time worrying about it.

If this happens to be something your wife drives I might would show her how to pop it back on just in case.

Who knows, a rock could have gotten wedged in there or something and when you shifted it helped push it off.

Definitely didn't snap into place. I already showed her what needs to be done in the case it comes off again but she wasnt too happy about that. I dont know if you can see it in the bottom pic I included, but part #9 seems to be incomplete.

I expect your problem is more on the end of #5. That doughnut is plastic and could be a little worn. I would think the stud is metal and likely still in good shape.

If you don't figure something else I'll try to look at mine this afternoon after I get off work. I went out there a few minutes ago but you can't really see it without crawling under there and I'm not really dressed for that right now.

So I got under the truck and looked closely at the plastic washer donut looking thing on piece #9. It was in fact boken on one side, thus not hold the range selector cable in place.

Fix:
Flipped plastic washer donut looking thing on piece #9. Snapped in range selector cable. Not the best solution but beats paying $20 for the whole assembly from GM

Part #9 is all steel, and parts stuck on it would have came out of part #5.

Whether its from 5 or 9, the piece that broke goes in between. The reason I said it was from 9 is because the bearing stayed clipped firmly there with the ability rotate, not at the end of the cable.

So, my original fix was short lived. Got stuck in reverse again. Orderedr a shifter repair pin from atfspeed.com. Install requires some grinding, but finished product is more durable and fit to take the abuse we put our trucks through.
