ABS light on, another Problem in 4HI

Something not working right?

by Karo » Mon Aug 29, 2011 4:12 pm

After 120000 km without big failures i had to bring my TB to my favorite repair shop.
I have 2 Problems so far.

1.Problem: ABS light is sometimes on, next day off - everything is good. When light is on there is no ABS. At the same time sometimes airbag light is on and after switching motor off / on airbag light is off, ABS light sometimes stays on. Personally i think ABS light could be a bad wheel hub bearing, they havent been changed in the past.

2. Problem: When driving in 4HI i have steering wheel vibrations at 25 mph till 38 mph. When driving in 2HI no Problems with vibrations.

I hope you could bring up some ideas! :friday:

I don't have much advice for #1. However, changing out a wheel speed sensor isn't too hard, and relatively low cost. No need to change the entire bearing.

As for 2, check for play in your CV shafts. Shake them around and see if you're seeing excessive movement somewhere. Are the vibrations with the speed of the turning tires? or faster?

ABS Problem is solved, was a bad speed sensor on the passenger front side.

Have checked for play in the CV shafts, everything o.k. - i think vibrations are with the speed of the turning tires but who knows exactly..
So far no Problems with tires checled the hub bearings, no problem found. When driving at 25 mph till 38 mph got the vibrations, above 38 mph they are gone (all in 4HI).

Maybe an obvious option, but have you gotten the tires balanced lately?

Heavy vibrations shaking in 4Hi
Short Story about the Problem:
When driving in 4Hi i have heavy vibrations beginning at 30 till 65 km/h. Above that speed no vibrations in 4Hi!
When shutting back to 2WD vibrations went away.
Tried the following to determine which kind of Problem i have:
With vibrations in 4Hi shifted to Neutral - no vibrations
With vibrations in 4Hi shifted to lower gear - vibrations will be the same
When driving in 2WD no vibrations present.
Vibrations are speed sensitive and affected by torque/load. Not steering sensitive!

From my thoughts it could only come from the front axle cv shafts, or the front propeller shaft - not from the hub bearings. TB has 130000 Km
Any thoughts or help?

Very strange Karsten. Sometimes these things are very hard to diagnose without actually feeling the vibration.

My suggestion is to try removing a few things one at a time.

Remove each CV shaft, one at a time, and see if the removal of one or both leads to a change. If no change, try removing the front driveshaft. Doing these things can narrow down your vibrations one at a time to different areas of the vehicle.

An alternative option is to put all tires in the air, and running the vehicle in 4wd to isolate where the vibration is coming from.

Hi James,

the roadie has answered on trailvoy and had the same idea (putting it on a lift and locate). I´ll try to get my repair guy to do that with me together. Last time he has found nothing..
I´ll report back later.
