P0526

Something not working right?

by PSH TB » Wed May 04, 2011 5:50 pm

Advanced didn't have anything to tell me about it (their system didnt even have anything about the code), and the OS didn't have a clear answer, and I haven't seen anyone on here really tackle the problem.

I know its got to do with the fan, but I would like to know if there's one specific problem or multiple things that could be causing it.

It is the fan clutch speed sensor probably giving the warning.

EV Fan Speed Input Circuit.

Detects a continuous short or open in the EV fan speed Input circuit.

No EV fan speed input activity is detected.

I knew what was wrong, but thank you for showing me.

What parts are needed to fix it?

Unfortunately I believe you need to change out the fan clutch. You can try checking the connection from the fan clutch to the harness to make sure it is making a proper connection.

If you don't have a good answer by this evening, I may have time to pull up the code in the FSM and copy down the troubleshooting steps for that code. If anyone else has the manual close to them, do the same.

This is from a GMTech forum.

"The P0526 is one of two problems: The fan clutch or the fan clutch wiring. There are two places the fan clutch wiring go bad: Where the engine harness plugs into the fan shroud and from the fan shroud to the clutch itself. At the fan shroud, the wires often break inside the insulation, so you can't just visually look at them, you need to give each wire a little tug and see if it streches and breaks. If it does, the wire inside was broke. If thats OK, then you will need to remove the fan clutch.
Once removed, you will be able to inspect the harness from the fan shroud to the clutch. These harnesses were not supported well and short out on the fan clutch. If this is the case, GM sells the harness seperately from the fan clutch.
If this is also OK, then you will need to replace the fan clutch (it will come with the harness to the fan shroud). they are a little pricey (usually $200-300 from the dealer)".

I changed my clutch while doing the water pump...worth it to do both at once since water pump is cheap. However my new 100 dollar fan clutch gave me this code. I checked and rechecked wiring but ended up going with djones old stock used fan clutch. Not sure I would try a new cheap one. My neighbor had issues w a nonstock one on his too.
