gage cluster

Something not working right?

by madmanvillain » Fri Dec 17, 2010 4:29 am

Has anyone had any issues with their gage clusters? It used to be just my oil pressure gage but now my gas gage is going. It seems that they are just not resetting because they both react (throttle moves the oil pressure needle, fueling up moves the gas gage). Also, i might be able to get an Envoy Gage cluster, is it a bolt in swap?

I've had issues with my speedometer since I bought my TB from my step brother. Since then my RPMs and oil pressure have been acting up too. All I can say is I've had the similar issues, I haven't pursued it much further.

Stepper motors in the cluster. Common issue with our vehicles. Replacement motors can be found on eBay inexpensively. Install is a matter of taking cluster out, opening it up, un-soldering the old motors, and soldering in the new ones...

My gas gauge has been pointing straight down since the day I bought it. Took some time to get used to. At least the yellow low fuel indicator still works. I fill every 300 miles to play it safe.

I've never had any issues with mine, but I will say that I have no idea about the former owners.

The dealer I talked to did say that the clusters are 100% swappable, less features. The driver information center may or may not contain things like TPMS or fuel used tools, etc.

Mine doesn't have the used fuel. TPMS is only available for certain model years.

My speedo is acting up, it's actually getting worse over time, but it only fails in cold weather or during extended drives, the severity goes from just "zeroing" at 10-40 MPH to moving up but not down (eventually results in me doing "N, D or 3" MPH) to completely freeze. The fuel tank is now starting to not go down after long drives.

I bought a stepper motor off ebay but haven't changed it, I'll probably just get another one for the fuel gauge and then do both. I recently bought a ScanGauge II, mainly because my speedometer is off due to the tires and so that I can get some other real measurements.

If you search the OS, there's quite a bit regarding this same problem, including instructions and part numbers. I also recall reading there that taking it to the dealer to have it fixed will go from $500-1k for a new unit + labor. I paid ~$11 for a stepper motor including shipping.

A temporary fix is to reset the cluster by removing fuse 24 (I believe), which is (on a 2004 I6) in the engine fuse block, on the row closest to the driver side fender, a 10A fuse. Usually removing it for 10 seconds or so will work.
This is an aggressive post. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate a post of this quality and depth.

Weird, when I fuel up it moves my gas gauge too?!?!?

Stepper motor is the cheapest way to go, as mentioned off ebay. If that doesnt work you move on to the expensive stuff.

I've got to stop reading these Troubleshooting threads.... 2 days after I read this my fuel gauge stuck itself at Full :wallbash: :wallbash: Last time it was the disconnect, before that it was the thermostat, and before that it was the Fan clutch.. Seems to happen right after I read about it!!

Now to find that stepper motor :angry whip:

I'm gonna be ordering the Step motors and do it myself for my trailblazer. From what I have read and seen on you tube , It does not look to hard especially considring I got huber soldiering skills from My hobby in model railroading. I'm use to working with small parts and circiut boards. If all goes smooth and I'm pretty sure it will. Anyone else in My area who needs this done I would happy to help out. Free of charge  Better then paying out 500 to 1000 bucks to a company who should have fixed this to begin with for free.
