Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

About to purchase. Critique my setup

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

by Dirtyd » Wed Apr 11, 2012 12:09 am

I am totally new to the truck world, lifts, wheels and so on. I have done lots of research and have come up with a pretty good idea of what I want. But, before I make the big purchase I want to make sure I'm not missing anything or that my setup will look completely ridiculous.

I will be towing my boat and ATV all summer on trips no more than 300 miles. In the winter I will be towing my ice house and ATV about the same. I plan on offroading the TB quite often but on nothing to crazy.

My TB is an 08 with 60k

Here is the setup I plan on buying:

MarkMc 3" Suspension lift
HD Bilsteins in front
BDS 5500 Rear
Z71 springs

Wheels - Cragar Soft 8's 16x8 4.5 backspacing with 6x5 to 6x5.5 1.5" adapters

Tires- This is where I need help... I don't want anything bigger than 33" and don't want crazy poke on them, just something that looks "right."

THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!

First couple of questions... What rear end do you have? Do you plan on doing a body lift with the lift? If not you can pretty much rule out the 33s

To be honest I have no idea what rear end is in it. Its obviously 4x4 and I would have to check out what rear end I have tomorrow. I don't want a body lift. 33" was the max, I'm totally cool with 31,32".

Tires go with 265/75/16, right about 32" fills the wheel wells nicely and should only require a bit of trimming of the fender liner, depending on tire style

I run 33's without a body lift. Had to do a little trimming but nothing major. Same wheels. You can look in my build thread to see what trimming I did.

When you go above 32s, you can do it with no body lift, but you've got to be smarter about it. Skinnier tires, less backspacing... or... just cut the crap out of things.

Thanks for the help everyone!

My biggest concern is having crazy poke, I don't want the tires sticking out abnormally far.

With the 16x8's with 4.5 backspacing and 265/75/16 will that sit right or poke out to much?

Thanks

I'm rollin on a 2" lift all around, z71s, and 89s up front. And the only thing I had to do was trim up my fenders.

As far as the OP is going. You have a good handle on what you need. the setup you've chosen is a very popular one. As far as tires go, BFGs might be what you're lookin for. You're doin well with your approach, so just do the same research for tires as you did for everything else. Don't worry about having what everyone else has or trying to impress us. Just do your research and get whats best for you. We will stop you (or at least warn) if you're about to do something dumb, but aside from that, keep on keepin on brother. Good work!

Okay, my final question is

What backspacing do I need with 1.5 adapters with 265/75/16's

I hate crazy poke, want something flush or a tad bit more than flush.

We can't answer that for you, as there isn't a 'correct' answer.

Do the math yourself, and you can figure out where your new rim will reside.

1.5" adapter = 1.5" more sticking out.

4" backspacing = 2" more sticking out. (stock is 6" backspacing)

8" rim width = 1" more sticking out. (stock is 7" rim width)

So what you laid out will stick out 4.5" more than stock.

That's a huge limitation if your mission demands certain size tires or tread patterns. If you've already defined "appearance" to be high on your list of goals, then that's going to force compromise on other things. As soon as you want a tire larger than the steering knuckle design will allow to tuck under the upper ball joint, it's going to (by definition) be sticking out at least 2"+. Are you really intending to go on trails where people are going to disapprove of tires that stick out? :safari: Or don't you have those sort of trails available?

you want flush or almost, go with a stock rim. Typically any GMC, Chevy, or Tundra truck rim will fit. My rims came off a Silverado and I dont even need fender flares (legally).

Your still running a spacer/adapter right?

You would have to use an adapter to fit silverado rims. They have a different bolt pattern. Also, you need an adapter to go above 30 inches.
