35s Ok for 3.73 gears?

Need new shoes? This is the place to discuss.

by Melaronius » Wed Sep 19, 2012 11:59 pm

So I came across another thread and read that with 3.42 the biggest tires that should be used are 32s. That got me wondering if I will be ok to run 35s with my 3.73.

I don't typically do a lot of long distance driving and rarely tow anything, but within the next 2 months I will be making a 1,000 mile trip home towing a loaded Uhaul trailer.

I guess its 2 questions. Would 35s be ok for normal use? If they are ok for normal use, what about towing 1k miles?

I'm running 33s with 3.73 with no issues, if I ever go to 35s I plan on upgrading to 4.10s at least. Not sure how it would do but it would put more strain on the tranny for sure and damage the gears a lot easier.

It would be ok but not desirable. I did it for a bit. I have now gone to 4.10 and would have rather gone lower.

I'm with them, you'd probably be ok with the gearing. Really the only time the gearing is MOST important (IMHO) is highway and towing. I wouldn't want to do much towing with my 32s and 3.41s. Short distances in 3rd you'd be ok, but my guess is that 1000 miles would probably overheat the trans.

Throw your stock tires back on for the trip, and just put the 35's back on when you get to where you are going.

Where are you located?

I'm in North Carolina right now, I'll be heading home to Louisiana soon.

I'm currently running 33s. I really hope those are good for the trip, while i have my stock tires I really don't want to put them back on. I'll only be towing a small Uhaul trailer. I'm not sure how much it will weigh but I can't imagine it being too much(bedroom set, tv, computer desk, clothes, etc.). This is the biggest I would be towing, I'll probably end up using a smaller one.

For future reference, how feasible is it to swap gears? I searched and found a few threads about the rears but not much on the front.

Doable but costly for pro to do or for specialized tools.

Fronts gears are easier than the rears IMO.

If you put 35s on without going to a 4.10 or 4.56 gear you will have trouble with the torque converter not locking up on the highway. Consequently you'll have terrible gas mileage and way too high trans temps. We had a member here have that issue with the exact setup you're asking about.

Sounds like I'll be sticking with 33s for the time being.

For reference, that thing is still somewhat big. I towed it ok with my 3.41s and stock tires a few years ago, but I was in D3. I would not want to tow the same thing for long distances with my current tires and gears. I think your direction is right, stick with 33s. Still, tow it in D3 and be easy on it. Use the 35s money on a trans cooler.

So after this thread I was going to plan a trans cooler. When I was installing my body lift I noticed that I already have one. I guess the previous owner installed it. Anyway, I ordered the Guard Dog 35's last night. There was a change of plans for my logistics and I wont be towing anything home. Instead, I will be driving a Uhaul and towing the truck.

You'll get where you need to go, but you'll still want to regear. With a modest investment in tools and a lot of time you can get it done. Just make sure you check the ole gear pattern and get it right before you install. In this case harbor freight is your friend.
