Wheel question

Need new shoes? This is the place to discuss.

by Dirtyd » Wed Aug 29, 2012 1:06 am

okay I have a question.. Help would be much appreciated. What options do I have for wheels that will be close to the stock backspacing and offset? The wheels I have stick out to far and I want something that will be flush with the fenders. I have searched and searched but cannot come up with any answers.

What wheels do you have now and what are their specs? What size tires are you running?

Which tire size did you run? That is important for the rim width.

OEM have 6" backspacing. They don't stick out unless you add spacers.

You put on ANY sort of aftermarket rims, wider tires, or spacers, and they're going to stick out. They HAVE to. It's a mandatory price of admission to offroading with suitable tires.

There's no aftermarket wheels made with the same specs as our OEM - so just go back to OEM if sticking out is a problem.

Am I missing something?

@roadie everything is correct. But if he has a bigger tire than it is somtimes not possible to mount them on a 7" width oem rim as the tire need a 8" wide rim or bigger. I have understood him that he would be as close to the fender as possible..

Mine don't really stick out. I consider them pretty much flush. Stock they are about 2" recessed.

Dave, it would help us if you could tell us what rims/backspacing/spacers you have. It might be that you have some 8 inch wide Cragar Soft 8's with 1.5 spacer and 4 inch backspacing that stick way out where if you had some stock 8 inch wide silverado rims with 1.5 inch spacers they won't stick out much past your fender.

I challenge you to step up and find some yourself. There is a plethora of info available on here, trailvoy, and gmtnation. Not to mention some google and phone work may find you something no one else has.

Dave, the aftermarket wheel selection for our platform is limited and to get some with the right offset is usually pretty expensive. The aftermarket wheel selection for the full size Chevy platform is very large with lots of takeoffs avail on CL.
Also later on if you change plans you are much more likely to be able to re-sell full size Chevy wheels than TB wheels.
If you are going to have to get adapters and wheels anyway it makes sense to go with the full size Chevy pattern.

There is a thread here somewhere that I think Roadie did that outlines backspacing and offset etc. If you read through that and actually understand what it means you can then figure out the backspacing/offset that suits you best.
I think the happy medium(with spacers) is somewhere between 5-6 inches of BS. Less than 5 inches of BS means the tires stick out more than most folks want.

You can go to any of the major online retailers to find wheels in our pattern but again the selection is limited.

Less backspacing sticks out further.

But keep in mind that backspacing is not the only variable. A 8 inch wide wheel and a 10 inch wide will stick out far differently even w the same backspacing.
