Clueless. Shopping for husbands birthday :) HELP?? LIFT KIT

We live in Wisconsin at the moment, but are in the middle of planning a move to Colorado.

We want to have the ability to do trail rides basically. leave for a weekend or more just out in the mountains or something and camping out. We love the outdoors so being able to go to basically anywhere (within reason) is nice. We dont need a daily driver rock crawler but we also dont want to get stuck on a pebble

Sounds great. The TB makes a great weekend camping rig for 2. In that case I'll say go ahead and get skid plates when funds allow but they certainty aren't a priority at the moment.

As you will soon learn, this is a never ending hobby. And often times, the lines between need and want are often blurred. Do your research and as you gain experience actually using and camping out of the rig you'll learn what you need, what you can justify, and what you really don't need at all.

Tire choice is a heavily debated topic on here. Probably can safely say that you can't go wrong with the duratracs, a lot of members here also use the treadwright tires. a 265/75 is generally the first step up when people throw bigger tires on these things.

Sounds like you've gotten everything lined up as far as the other parts go.


After that a radiator skid and oil pan skid and you're pretty good to go. It'll give you two many years of enjoyment and I think you'll be surprised what it's actually capable of.

In the mean time, i have another dumb question... I know I was asking about shocks and whatnot, but tires are alot more expensive than we thought (guess that happend when you go bigger than stock lol)

So my question is: With marks 3" kit is it REQUIRED that you get shocks? or will we be ok for a little while just using the 3" spacers from mark and the wheel spacers?


(also, im trying to convince him to go 285/75/16 )

285/75 ill suggest shocks and you'll have to cut the front fenders with those bad boys.

When I did my lift in, had to get new shocks, but just for the rear. I did the Mark lift as well, 3". As Mark described it to me, front strut lengths are all the same, so as long as the ones you have are in good shape, they'll be fine. I went with the BDS 5500 series on the rear, and like them very much.

so with marks 3" lift, 265/75 should fit without spacers correct? just trying to keep an eye on total cost here and if he doesnt NEED the spacers than they can wait and he can buy them later himself

Ok, so we've made a "concious" decision. We're going to go with the Wrangler Authorities and see how it works out. Reason being, we cant beat the price, and all in all its a daily driver for now. We havent MADE the move yet to the mountain area, and the tires do have the capability to do light off-roading which is all it calls for at the moment. By the time we make the move we can look at another set.

And he's tossing and turning between marks 2.5" and 3" kit. Only because initially we didnt plan for shocks, so we might save that for later on down the road, maybe we'll see.

I'll keep you all up to date! and Yes i plan on handing the forums over to him once i'm done Thank you all for the help so far!!!

IMO...

Get the 3" now. Get the shocks now. Get the spacers now. You'll need all of these and you REALLY don't want to have to tear the truck apart again to do shocks.

Check CL for some used tires in the size you want. 265/75/16 is a pretty common size on full size trucks. I bet you can find some deals for someone who's trading up to bigger.

I'm with Donny on this. The lift, spacers and shocks should run you around $600? current pricing guestimate. Be sure to use the discount code for ShockWarehouse as well. That will save you some money.

You can run your current tires w/o spacer in place for now until you can purchase the replacement tires if you need too. But having to take the front apart to redo for shocks will be more work than it's worth if you can swing replacing them at the same time.

You also get the bennefit of not wearing your replacement tires if the alignment shop doesn't get it right the first time.

I'd also strongly recommend getting the 3" lift. Get the shocks and spacers. You don't want to be tearing apart the front end multiple times.
Like I mentioned ealier, the treadwrights are a good option for a cheap tire and they have a fantastic warranty and track record. It's really hard to beat $121.00 for a 265/75 gaurd dog.
You could be lifted with tires for 12-1500.

If you do decide to go bigger than a 265/75 know that you're going to be cutting the fenders a good little bit.
