Not being able to see it in person, If you think it wont be a huge PITA, you might be better off cutting a window through the frame and welding in a new nut and plating over the window. I'd trust Jame's welding. But than again, that could just be more trouble than it's worth especially if you are just looking at an easy re-tap of an old nut.
If you re tap the old nut, Id say use locktite on the bold because the threads on the nut might not be as tight as a new nut.
