Gas smell from air vents

Something not working right?

by Beamer » Tue Nov 20, 2012 11:09 pm

I have searched all 3 sites and I it seems my problem is unique. I smell gas from my ac vents for a few minutes after startup only after it sits overnight. It does not smell when the recirc is on. No issues starting the engine, it runs great and no fuel guage issues. The smell is slowly getting worse, don't see any gas leaks anywhere. I can live with the smell was just wondering if it is a concern or if I should just bite the bullet and replace the sending unit. I might qualify for the service bulletin (2003 with only 76k miles), I bought it in Maryland, but have lived in Texas for the last 9 years and it is not an included state.

There's three? :work:

Hehe. I know.

The sending unit is involved with a lying fuel level gauge. Don't think the dealer will apply the TSB unless you have that specific issue. If you have the cracked filler neck or a bad gasket on top of the tank where the pump and sending unit are installed, then you'd have fuel smell and possible wet appearance back there.

For a front fuel smell that doesn't show up anywhere, I'd start by checking the fuel pressure regulator hose to the intake manifold. If it smells like gas, the diaphragm in the FPR could be leaky. Or the housing. Teebes just had his fail in Alaska but he limped home after using JB Weld. Check out the FPR.

After sitting overnight (when the smell is strongest at start up) I started it with the hood open and sure enough gas flows (for a split second) out of the FPR housing.
A new one is on order from RockAuto.

Thanks Roadie!
