Sway Bar End links

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

by Cable810 » Sun May 27, 2012 6:47 pm

Ok so this coming Saturday we will be installing the front half of the Lift. My questions is what is the best way to remove the End Links with out rounding the allan key. When we did the Rear we rounded the Allan Key, so it got stuck half way off. Yes we did Use a Propane Torch and hit it with PB Blaster still didn't move. Just makes my question why GM even did that :angry whip: I can't remember where I read this but I think we can run with just the Rear End Links connected. Not 100% sure though.

Thanks Guys.

I was able to change the struts without removing the end links. Several people run with fronts disconnected and rears connected, but I can't stand how that drives on the street. Like most trucks, Kyle removed his rear bar, completely, and it feels largely the same on the street, but flexes out great offroad.

I'm running with no swaybars currently and I'm liking the ride.

The ride, running down the highway, is great... The handling, on the other hand... not so much...

I've given a couple people full part numbers and how-to to make their own, without a welder, but I haven't posted up how to do it. To say I've been a little busy is a bit of an understatement.

How did you manage? We managed the Rear.

Um... I jacked up the whole front end and put it on jack stands, then removed the strut upper mount nuts, then took off the lower nut with an impact, then used a tie rod end puller to pop the bottom mount off of the lower control arm tapered stud, then pulled the strut assembly out. The reverse was done to install the new stuff.

Thanks to mike I built the end links. They work beautiful and it's not hard to build at all.

Some of you have had better luck than me.

I had to cut the bastards off in several places.

My fronts were pretty seized on when I did my lift. A little brute force did the trick for most of them, one I ended up cutting off.

NOT sent from an IPhone.

I will probally have to hack em off and replace them. Just don't have the money to get new ones right now. Thats why I'm trying to avoid having to remove them and the samething happen to the Rear Links.

When i did my lift i loosened up the mount and let the sway bar come down about an inch. This gave enough wiggle room to fit the shock assembly back in otherwise it wasn't going to fit for me.
To completely remove the endlinks when they were stuck i used a prybar and leaned on it while the nut was being loosened. It bound up the endlink enough that i could get the nut off. If that didn't work i'd just cut the damn thing off.

I've been running with the front disconnected for over 6 months. I prefer it that way, but i'm also using the 89 springs. The rear is still connected. The only reason i haven't disconnected it is sheer laziness.

Caleb, when I did my lift I actually unbolted the sway bar itself instead of dealing with the end links. I didn't realize it was an allen head inside the bolt.

I didn't unbolt the sway bar all the way, just most of the way and had enough room. 2nd go around I disconnected the end links. If you can't get the end links off you might be able to get by disconnecting the bar mount itself.

I would in the mean time spray those end link bolts with PB Blaster every couple days until lift time.
BTW, Liquid Wrench or Kroil is almost 2X as good as PB Blaster.

I read BDS Suspension Directions and noticed that by un bolting the Sway Bar I don't have to mess with the End Links like you said... Hopefully!

I have heard/read good stuff about that ATF/Acetone mix. I have a can of PB and Liquid Wrench. Sooner I start soaking the bolts da better!?!?
