Racing springs to replace factory springs

BDS, ReadyLift, Smaxx... You name it, we know about it here.

by lupisnegris77 » Tue Apr 17, 2012 8:03 pm

Hey guys been awhile since I've been on. I just got back from a deployment. So after much debating and calculating and found a racing spring with a 495lb rate that by my calculations should fit in our strut assembly. So given that I have alittle extra money and found them on eBay for 30 a piece plus shipping I decided to pull the trigger. Wish me luck and it's good to be back ;).

Oh and just in case anyone was wondering they're "trucoil" from speedway motors I believe theyve been mentioned before on the os.

Interesting, that's stiffer than the 89 springs. Looking forward to seeing what you find.

Be nice to find something that worked. Still going to use a spacer or spring lift only?
I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...but
they've always worked for me.

For now yes, i will keep the spacers but I figure if these work then there's always the option to get the 12" or 14" coils which could eliminate the need for the spacers(in theory). Not trying to take away from any of the vendors or anything, just looking for new alternatives and I was thinking of going with a lower rate but this was $30 a spring so I couldn't pass it up lol I've got 83s right now and they've begun sagging pretty bad I have some extra weight from a cheapo bull bar I picked up for around $40, it weighs about 80lbs obviously not as much as the armor and steel bumpers but should keep me from straining the cv boots too much. They should be in end of this week so install Friday or Saturday. I'll keep y'all posted and make sure I get some before and after pics along with how the ride is after.

How would sitting lower on lower rate stock springs strain the CV boots?

my only guess is he was saying the new springs might normally be too much but hopefully with the bull bar it will keep it down enough to not stress the boots.

Yes lol exactly what I meant but I will be getting armor too which should offset some of the stiffness as well

Springs are in, not gonna lie at first I was extremely nervous they wouldn't fit because the diameter appeared to small but after rechecking the numbers they should be fine. Unfortunately I don't have a computer right now and I'm unsure how to load them from my iPhone. However if anyone really wants pics pm me a phone number or email and I can send you some. The springs are 10" x 2.5"I.D. The main difference between our springs and these is ours get smaller at the ends and these are 2.5" all the way through(which is why I was initially concerned) I should be able to install either tomorrow or Saturday. Lord willing this will work so we have another viable option since its only a matter of time before the factory springs are gone.

Sweet deal man! Can't wait to see pictures either tomorrow or saturday. Have you decided if you were still going to use the spacers?

Still planning on it as of right now but that can change quickly if my cv's look too stressed after I get em on but hoping that won't be a problem(fingers crossed) and if they do look too stressed but the ride is good on these springs my next test will be with a softer(prolly around 400 or 450)14" long coil which should be 4" of lift since our factory's are 10"

Nice! Do you think it will have less stress on the cv's with just a spring instead of a 2.5" spacer lift?

CV Stress is related to angle, not spring pressure/length.

4" of suspension lift from a spacer+88 spring = 4" longer coils as far as the CVs are concerned.

You will likely get more stuff from that setup though. Check to see how much space you have, or your tires may self-clearance the fenders.

Might be a dumb question. But what do you mean by "get more stuff from that set-up though" and what do you mean by the tires self-clearancing the fenders? Sorry man...

It is the same either way but the angle could be altered slightly with just springs. it would be a solid 4" of lift up front for about $150 shipped lol my final setup if this works is to put on the skyjacker lift coils from a Tahoe on the rear. I don't have as much expertise as a lot of others but I think this will work, what can I say I'm an optimist lol. My only other concern is the potential to top out the struts themselves but we've got a decent amount of travel in the bilstein struts so hopefully it'll be a nonissue.

Damn fish you beat me to it lol. But yes I'm thinking there could be a lot of gains out of a setup like this possibly even the ability to up the ante to 37s with the springs and body lift lol. I will continue to experiment though and hope to get the results we all want. :salut:

To the contrary...your tires may travel UP farther than with a spacer lift, meaning you might not be able to run 35s without serious fender cutting, let alone 37s.

37s.... you really want to break more shit than I have? :finger:
