Front Differental removal

I am removing my front diff because the ring or something is broke inside. I have done all the test in the work sheet on here. on the lift and 4hi iit bout kill the motor when put in drive. so I started diagnosing and disconnect front drive shaft tried turning the pinon shaft locked solid. so gotta rebuild it.

i have disconnected it from the oil pan and remove cv shafts, intermidate shaft, 4wd disconnect, skid plates, and part of the frame that covers steering.

Zac, if you have ever thought about re-gearing or putting in a front locker now is the time to do it!

Zach, the best advice I've seen is to take the differential apart while it is caged beside the engine. Take it out in 3 pieces: carrier, left half, right half.

do you have to reset the pinion preassure after u have it in pieces to put it in or can you set that when you have it out.

I believe you can set the carrier preload via the adjuster on the driver's side while the vehicle is on the truck. I think pinion preload must be configured prior to being put on the truck - but I recall something in the shop manual about adjusting the pinion preload while on the vehicle too. I'm hoping Fish chimes in, as I know he has had to go through that entire process.

well ring gear and pinion were fine just the pinion bearing was toast. replaced it. now just waiting on outer cv bearing and seal to come in. and all the parts to rebuild my actuator.

Yes, you can set the preloads with the diff on the truck. It's way easier to do it with the diff out though. Setting backlash would be a royal bitch with the diff on the truck.

You could pull the diff out in 3 pieces, reassemble/torque it outside the truck, set all your critical measurements, and then disassemble and reinstall that way... All the measurements would hold as long as you properly torqued the case bolts once in the truck.

Yea I figured that out experimentin saturday. got it put back in. I am thinkin bout marks 3 inch lift and bout flippin ucas.
