The upper ball joint went in fine, but while doing that, and prepping the passenger side for the new cv and 4wd selector rebuild I noticed fluid on the driver side diff. Come to find out the seal has gone bad. So off to GM to buy a new axel seal. Lovely....
This is what was done today.
1. install new upper BJ
2. install new axel seal DS (GM part # 12471618 - Ill confirm that when I check my records) - As far as my suppliers were able to tell, this part is available only through a gm dealer currently or gmpartsdirect. it wont be found at napa, or pepboys kinda thing.
3. install new cv PS
4. Rebuild and inspect 4wd selector
5. Rotate tires
6. Re fill front diff with fluid
While taking the 4wd selector apart I found that yes some moisture had gotten in, but not much. The grease was mostly still orange not black likes JD's. Also it seemed to be dried out in some places.
Upon further inspection I think my shift fork will need to be replaced as it has signs of wear. Id like JD to chime in on how much is too much.
1 large gear had some scoring on the collar, but rode fine on the needle bearing. No signs of play, or discoloring on the metals. But I think if I order a new fork, I will just order a new bearing and gear as well.
I cleaned everything 1 at a time, by hand. Then re greased the internals with some LUCAS grease. I couldnt find the mobile 1 stuff that JD used near by so LUCAS saved the day as the next best thing.
I cleaned off the excess grease, and used RTV sealant like JD to make sure that no more water and dirt got in.
So there you have it, a full days work of hoping to solve one problem, and finding another hahaha. Pics will be tomorrow. At least for now I have peace of mind. And a lot of sweet new fresh parts on my ride. I cant wait for Barton to finish my bumper! Looks like 2 months roughly
