4wd vibration

Something not working right?

by Zero » Wed Dec 22, 2010 12:57 am

Ill start with this.....it was a long day....and Ill post pics tomorrow. hahahaha

The upper ball joint went in fine, but while doing that, and prepping the passenger side for the new cv and 4wd selector rebuild I noticed fluid on the driver side diff. Come to find out the seal has gone bad. So off to GM to buy a new axel seal. Lovely....

This is what was done today.
1. install new upper BJ
2. install new axel seal DS (GM part # 12471618 - Ill confirm that when I check my records) - As far as my suppliers were able to tell, this part is available only through a gm dealer currently or gmpartsdirect. it wont be found at napa, or pepboys kinda thing.
3. install new cv PS
4. Rebuild and inspect 4wd selector
5. Rotate tires
6. Re fill front diff with fluid

While taking the 4wd selector apart I found that yes some moisture had gotten in, but not much. The grease was mostly still orange not black likes JD's. Also it seemed to be dried out in some places.

Upon further inspection I think my shift fork will need to be replaced as it has signs of wear. Id like JD to chime in on how much is too much.

1 large gear had some scoring on the collar, but rode fine on the needle bearing. No signs of play, or discoloring on the metals. But I think if I order a new fork, I will just order a new bearing and gear as well.

I cleaned everything 1 at a time, by hand. Then re greased the internals with some LUCAS grease. I couldnt find the mobile 1 stuff that JD used near by so LUCAS saved the day as the next best thing.

I cleaned off the excess grease, and used RTV sealant like JD to make sure that no more water and dirt got in.

So there you have it, a full days work of hoping to solve one problem, and finding another hahaha. Pics will be tomorrow. At least for now I have peace of mind. And a lot of sweet new fresh parts on my ride. I cant wait for Barton to finish my bumper! Looks like 2 months roughly :woot:

For the fork - make sure it "hugs" the collar tightly - there can be some play in the in-out direction, but you don't want the hug to be loose enough that it can slip over one of the sides of the collar.

How did you get the CV shafts out? They can be a pain.

I removed the lower BJ and outer tie rod end. Gave me tons of room to get at the cv.

the fork sat on the gear fine, no extra play, but the tabs were worn. You will see when I post the pics.

I have not put it in 4wd yet, I was tired, and just needed to get back home. I will give it a shot today. But everything sounded great on the ride home, I didnt hear any grinding or binding. It was nice to rotate the tires too, there was a ton of dirt and salt stuck to the inside of my wheels. I need to get my truck washed more often.

On a totally separate note, the vibration we all are feeling could have to do with those of use using aftermarket wheels, not spacers, and no centre hub. Some after market wheels require a small plastic hub centric ring to be installed to keep the wheel totally centre. I am going to ask my wheel guy the next time I go in for a balance if anything is available for my setup.

That fork looks fine. Very minimal wear. That's actually the best looking disconnect I've seen yet.

Did a test today, and yes the vibration is still there. everything seems to work fine otherwise. Next I will try the wheel hub idea my boss had.

Thanks.. He doesn't have the same lift or springs !
I thought it might be from the car being to much lifted in front and with the sway bar disconnected , the cv joints would bind under acceleration and could make those vibrations ..

Well someone correct me if I'm wrong here, BUT i'll take a swing at it.
If the vehicle is sitting static and one moves the selector from 2wd to 4hi, the only change in motion occuring in the vehicle is in the xfer case and disco. Wouldn't that isolate the discrepency to those 2 components? And since we've verified the disco is good, its now isolated to either the xfer case OR the actuator.
In the helicopter maintenance community, we call this a "voodoo gripe".

This thread sat dormant for over a year, I believe he got it resolved with the wheel hub. Zero hasn't been on for a while.

Today i opened my front disconnect and i discovered that the second ball bearing needs replacement and that is the cause of my vibrations on 4Hi .
