Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Bluetooth OBD2 adapter + Torque = Scangauge on crack.

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

by fishsticks » Sun Jan 09, 2011 12:26 am

I did a quick search as I thought I heard about this here, but apparently not.

There is an app for Android known as Torque which parses OBD2 data from the diag port via Bluetooth.

When combined with this:

You get a realtime scanner with customizable displays, DTC code read/reset, GPS tracked speed/mpg, and logging capability. It supports custom PIDs as well (ie trans temp)

Torque costs 5 bucks... so I'm into this setup for just over $30 at the moment.

Thought I'd share.

Been logging all of the trips I've made in the last couple days. I've discovered a few things.

1. My truck likes to sit at 195*F for the temp vs the 210* many people seem to have. I have replaced my thermostat.

2. My MPG calculated from GPS speeds is abysmal. 10.5-11mpg.

3. I haven't gotten the extended PID for trans temp to work yet. Torque's changelog indicates expanded trans temp support in the next update so I'll just wait and see.

4. Torque calculates your 0-60, 1/8 mile and 1/4 mile times. I LOL'd at seeing all of these for my truck.

5. I had a P0320 code stored that DID NOT LIGHT THE CEL. I suspect this was part of my mysterious stumbling problem awhile back. I cleared it and haven't had it (or the stumble) return.

The true data as seen by the Scangauge and Torque is the truth, and 190-195 is entirely normal. 210 on the dash gauge is a lie made up by the PCM to put the needle at exactly 12 Noon on the gauge, which Ma and Pa Kettle (average non-enthusiast drivers) seem to prefer to the truth.

That seemed logical, as the thermostat I installed was rated at 195*F. I swear I've seen folks saying that their Scangauges were reporting 210* though. Oh well.

my scangauge reads between 88- and 92c for my water temp. I think I may have a thermostat stuck part way open.

Just to add to the discussion - mine sits at 200*F in the winter, and can get as high as 220*F when on the highway in the summer (I think due to the bumper and big headlights + low RPMs due to the 3.41 gears, if I pop it into 3rd, it cools down to 200*F.

Scangauge for me shows 209 max, falling to 197 when the fan turns on. I do think it is slightly above normal, but I have seen the needle fall in the past (after I put the e-fan in).

The only abnormial thing that I see is closed loop mode almot all the time, except when I step on it.

Keep me posted, I want to know if it works with the iPhone.

Currently it's Android only. I haven't seen anything implying an IOS version on the forums.

the Iphone has a couple of free apps and a few pay apps. From what I can tell most of what is made for the Iphone is wifi based. There are one or two bluetooth based hardware pieces. Some of the stuff I have seen is as much as the scangauge II or more.

Well my engine light randomly made an appearance so I guess I will be ordering this. My jeep buddy/ex verizon manager is onboard as well. You should get a commission...or I could ship your rear brushguard...

I owe you gears for that.

I installed my new PCM from PCM4Less today. Interesting thing: I'm sure the new PCM is based off a newer revision software than mine was. It sends data across the OBD bus MUCH faster than the old PCM. Interesting.

I also haven't set a code P1336 yet. No CASE relearn.

I got mine set up yesterday. I haven't spent alot of time with it yet, but I am liking what I am seeing so far. The bluetooth adapter also came with a cd of various programs, and looks like I can use my laptop to sync with the vehicle also.

Thanks for the heads up.
