4 wheel drive switch?

Something not working right?

by DmccartneyFF2TB » Sat Dec 11, 2010 3:08 pm

Today i wanted to play in the yard (We have a inch of snow lastnight) So i droped it in to 4 low. Well after i wanted to put it back in to 2 wheel drive and it would not come out of 4 low. I played with it for a few mins waited nothing. Then i turned the wheel hard left and it poped out. Any advice?

someone who knows better than I will chime in later, but it could have something to do with your 4wd disconnect. Or possibly the switch as well. Not sure. Do you have any cel's? before or after?

And I know its a stupid question, but it has to be asked..... do you know the proper procedure for using 4lo on our trucks? Were you trying to do this in park?

What do you mean it popped out?

Did you hear the motors working when you were switching out of lo? What did the dash lights do and how did they act? Need some details.

The 2wd light was blinking.......... so when i turned the steering wheel all the way to the left you can tell your in 4wd well it felt like that, then pop and i went to 2wd. so all it did prior was blink 2wd.

How long had you been in the snow? I know with mine, after a long time playing in the snow, it gets snow up there, and won't switch from 2WD to 4WD. If I let it thaw out overnight in the garage, it will be fine.

When the 2WD light is blinking, it means it's in transition or that the requirements to get it there have not been met. Sounds like your switch is working fine.

Steering wheel placement shouldn't make a difference to the TCCM. And if the front end disconnect was bound up it wouldn't transmit that signal to the TCCM.

So to clarify... when you switched from 4LO to 2HI, it just sat there and blinked at 2HI. You turned the wheel hard, heard a pop, and the light stopped blinking and became solid at 2HI?

That's how my shift fork broke. I'd put a dollar on you not being able to reengage 4WD until you rebuild your disconnect now.

Ok then its in 2 hi your good. The pop I dont know what that is ,have you tried to put it back in 4hi? if not when you do attempt make sure your at a dead stop and in neutral. try both of them 4 hi and 4lo. then we can start to figure it out.

4 low engage/disengage can only be done while in neutral. Something tells me that your werent in nuetral at the time, hense why your 2wd light was blinking but wasnt disengaging from 4. You prob just put it into neutral as you were turning the wheel, which gave the effect of why it 'popped out' when you did that. That bang was just the disconnect disengaging.

re building the disconnect should be apart of everyones normal maint. sched. Its very easy, and can save you a big headache down the line or on a trail.
