Rubbing on Frame?

Need new shoes? This is the place to discuss.

by Rob93 » Thu Nov 11, 2010 12:47 pm

Anyone else rubbing their frame? I did a search on the OS and it looks like Mark is.... Just asking because I found the source of my rubbing today lol, never thought of even looking at the frame... Its just a tiny bit at full turn, and scuffed it up a bit... Not exactly the easiest thing to trim either....

Cut out a section larger that the area your rubbing, then cut some steel plate and box the frame back up. Maybe weld a flat piece to the bottom and back of the frame for added rigidity.

Far cheaper to buy new wheels...

I rub way up on the firewall, but sit far to wide to have a frame issue.

Don't turn so sharp! :slap:

Really doesn't look like much of a rub. Does it happen during normal driving or when wheeling?

We must question if the 235 85 16 or 17" equivalent isn't more appropriate for these trucks. :coffee:

Why would they be more appropriate? A proper wheel and tire combo with attention paid to offset and backspacing is what is needed. I know that size is far from appropriate for my truck does. I have not seen anyone that would benefit from a size like that. Almost everyone runs 255 or wider without issue.

FWIW, 235/85-16 is a 31" tire, and is what comes on duallies...

Oh Perfect Mike. That will be the next brilliant idea for someone! :wallbash:

The point is if we are going to throw anysize tires on there will be issues.

Sorry guys, I'll shut up now.

It was also the size tire that came on my '90 (SRW) CTD, before they started going with more reasonable width tires... I replaced them with LT265/75-16 tires...

Randy I understand what you're saying... the narrower we go, the easier it is to fit with less modifications to the truck.

I also think tread width directly affects rolling resistance. Wider = more resistance.

My thoughts are, if you afraid to break something or mess something up, leave it like it came from the factory. Gotta pay if you wanna play.

I rub also on my frame but it doesn't actually do damage so I don't care that it happens.

And my tires are the 285/75r16

The WK Grand Cherokee came stock with 235/65/17 or something like that. You can get 235/80/17 and that's 31.9, but yeah, that's OEM size for the dually Ram and maybe other 1 tons. All the tires I've seen in that size are E's. The Revo2 in 235/85/16 is a 31.7 (same height as most 265/70/17s), but is only available in load range E (not an issue for most of us)
This is an aggressive post. You probably won’t like it. It is quite doubtful that you have the taste or sophistication to be able to appreciate a post of this quality and depth.

Same reason I'm not going with the 285/75/16 crowd Randy. Narrower tires will fit over a wider range of wheel offset scenarios. Although, I'd go with a 255/86/16 myself, for a 33" tire over a 31" one. Glad to have you back on here
