Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

is it normal for the CV joints to come apart?

Something not working right?

I got the suspension torn apart enough for the axle joint to slide apart. I cut the boot ring off and it slid right out of the joint. Nothing seems to be missing or broken I just want to make sure my joints are ok before I put it together.

It's the three bearing section that slid out of the joint itself. I will try to get a picture.

The tripot should separate easily without the boot to hold it together. Normal. :)

Totally normal, but make sure all the pieces go back in. There is alot of little needles in there but the grease usually holds it all ok. Pm if you need help.

It's the front axle equivalent of the slip joint at the front end of the rear driveshaft. It lets the suspension cycle up and down, which requires the CV and driveshaft to change lengths slightly. It's also why you can't pull the CV shaft out of the vehicle, and have to whack at it from behind.

Oh, and here's another reminder to remove and grease the rear driveshaft slip joint every 50K miles or so.

Hey guys thanks for the help. Got both inside boots replaced today. I used some that are longer by about 1-2". I also put hose clamps on both ends for easier trail maint. if need be. I got an extra and put it in the truck with the axle socket. That would be a bear on a rough trail to swap tho.

I have to admit, I have never worked on a 4x4 vehicle. All my experiance is RWD V8 and a couple of FWD vehicle which I HATE working on.

Again thanks guys, this site is invaluable to a newbie! :thumright:
