Rust thru on frame rail

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

I have been getting the numbers together to do a suspension rebuild, only has 157000 miles. The truck came from Ohio and has some rust. Can I just weld some plate over this break out area? Everything else looks pretty good.

If I found that on my truck, I would take it to a frame shop for suggestions, and maybe even hire them. I don't feel I can see enough from the pictures to really know. That's a pretty important area of the frame. I believe that's between your sub frame and you're engine mounting area.

That spot is right under the Strut Tower. Thought I looked familiar for a minute.

Please report what you end up doing. I noticed my frame had the exact same issue while changing out my motor mount last weekend (Passenger side too as well if it matters).

Body shop guy says weld a plate. Fab. shop buddy say's get the rust neutralized, and if there's anything to weld to we will plate over it. I'll post up a photo when I get the front end on it. Guessing the plows push all the brine and salt to the right side of the road. The driver side is good.

You should clean it really well with a grinder/flapdisc/wire wheel, and run some weld into it. That's what I would do anyway. Shouldn't take an hour even.

Grind the loose rust down an put some fluid film on it. It is only a plate welded to the frame, you can see it in the picture. I had solved that problem with soaking it in fluid film and after it has dried out putting some chassis paint on it. I have looked inside the frame with a camera and there was no rust inside. But i have soaked the whole frame with fluid film, to keep the frame rust free inside. reminds me of doing it this year again after 3 years.

I learned by trial & error that chassis saver is really great to use on any rust ~ http://www.shop.monstaliner.com/Chassis ... 934-01.htm

that rust looks as if its through on the side, I'd cut all cancer out & re-weld in new material

I have the exact issue in that same spot as well. The passenger side is actually much worse than the driver side.

Ive taken steps to grind down or scrape as much rust off as possible from both front portions of the frame rail and then spray them with RustOleum Rust Restorer. I am now in the process of top coating everything with a flat black.

Ill be monitoring the situation as well as I think I may have to weld in a plate if it gets worse.

I also plan on doing the same all down the frame rails as it seems that the factory coating (paint?) is just gone, left to surface rust.

I realize this is an ancient post but I have the exact issue on the passenger side of my 2002 TB. Any updates? Did anyone have it plated over?

I don't think Rust-O-Leum is going to be of much help here! That's going to need some new metal! A frame shop could probably cut that out and patch fairly easily.

The underside edges of the hood and trunk lid, as well as the door bottoms rust through. Has the car been repainted? Original rust is one thing
