I thought they couldn't fly.
You forget that their native habitat is very high grass. They often get lost in this grass too, due to their very small brains. They forget their location, destination, and orientation very quickly. When they do, they shoot up and let loose their "warble" that sounds distinctly human.

I got the "his beak" thing to open the egg but it didn't appear to open his own egg... more along the lines of another infant.
