A temporary fix could be limiting chains or straps to keep the joint from rotating too much... just in case you wanted to keep it from happening again on the trip.

I think the joint shouldn't be the limiting factor. If it had limited the rotation, it might have ripped off whatever the stress got transferred to, and then the trailer wouldn't have stayed connected and towable.
Greg - you should have just paid the gas money of some unemployed local dude with an offroad Envoy to go with you and watch your six. This solo stuff is DANGEROUS!
