Offroad Trailblazers and Envoys

Losing oil pressure while climbing hills

Trailblazer and Envoy related, but not off-road related...

by v7guy » Mon Nov 26, 2012 12:29 pm

I was climbing some hills the other day and lost all oil pressure. I assume due to the front sump. I was at a decent angle. The engine appears to be fine but I was wondering if anyone has ran across this before.
The oil level is a little on the high side so I don't suppose that's it.
Is the only solution don't climb steep hills or something like an accusump?

I notice it occasionally on a really steep climbs, but it does not happen often enough to make me worry. It also seems that I can climb the same thing and it does not happen every time. Kinda weird really. I just dont worry about it.
I hate to advocate weird chemicals, alcohol, violence or insanity to anyone...but
they've always worked for me.

This. It's a split second decision you have to make. Near the top of the hill? Meh. In the middle of a really hard pull? I'd probably stop and back down with the engine off.

I see it as well. After about 30 seconds on a 20-25 degree hill. About ten seconds of 40 degree sandstone. I don't do extended climbs at those angles so I was never tempted to turn the engine off and try a faster approach.

ah ok, I was hoppin up the hill and struggling towards the top and noticed 0 on the gauge and a check gauges light. I popped it in neutral and started slowly rolling back down. As soon as I got off the gas it came right back up to normal pressure and didn't seem any worse for the wear. In the end I just didn't make another run with more momentum cause I didn't want to tank the engine.

Happens to me as well, I think for most an accumulator would be a good fix. For me, I need to go to a rear sump pan.
