Front end clunk

Something not working right?

by Moots1288 » Sat Sep 07, 2013 7:42 pm

I've been having a front end clunk that's been going on in slow speed to a dead stop at full lock. It does not happen above 20MPH. I have checked the tie rod ends and replaced the ball joints. I also swapped in HD TREs and when i did that I found out that the spindle was to large and me and V7guy made a sleeve for it, he also did that for his and it has been working fine, there is no play in the rod end when I wiggle it back and forth. Seems that it only happens when there is full pressure on the front end. Anyone have any ideas?

Hmmm... is it just driving straight at under 20mph? Or are you saying only when you hit final resting at a stop? Does it happen at all in relation to suspension flex? If so, could be UCA bushings. Coming from both sides or can't tell?

Ok, i just re-read it again. Are you saying at full lock left/right while coming to a stop? Does it happen every time or just random?

Sorry.. I didn't add it in, full left or right everytime at full lock as soon as I'm about to hit the steering stop. It jerks the whole truck.

IIRC, you recently replaced the control arms and have new control arm bushings. Are your strut (coil over) mounts tight?

From the experiences I have... I'd check the driver first. Full lock at over 20mph in a lifted tb, are ya crazy? haha

You can do it at 1pm when you're sitting in the Walmart parking lot by yourself.

When I've noticed it the most is when he's parking, those slow maneuvers in tight areas. When he gets turned all the way it makes a clunk/pop. The bushings in those control arms are maybe 6-9 months old, I'd be really really surprised if they're the problem.

After further analysis this morning by me and Jason we have come to a 95% conclusion that it is the rack. Yippy!

I know Kyle really likes the Detroit axle reman CV shafts so they seem to be a reputable company. Reman rack and pinion for your truck on rock auto range from $190 to $290 plus core charges and shipping.

I'd say $168 free shipping is a pretty ok deal.

Iirc I saw someone either here or GMT that was having a similar issue and ended up being his sway bar bushing where the bar mounts to the under body. I guess those rubber u shaped mounts failed. Or could be your rack.

I had an issue with a clunk that was followed by an alignment issue on AJ (hotness) truck. Does your truck seem to do that? His was 1 loose bolt on the lower control arm.

I replaced those bushings as I saw that post also. And all my LCA bolts are tight.

Does it do it when the front end is lifted in the air? If so, get someone down there to take a look when you turn the wheel. If nothing else, trace out a repetitive pattern in a parking lot that creates the noise. Since its at low speeds, have someone walk along and try to locate the origin of the sound. Left side vs right side, front of the wheel well vs back of the wheel well, top vs bottom. Then you'll at least have a quadrant to begin looking closer at. I had one of these once, very similar, and it was that some of the "frame shield" at the front of the ifs subframe got bent into the lca and was rubbing. For some reason when doing slow parking maneuvers it bound up and would jump really odd-like. Finding it was a matter of performing the same thing I said above.
