Power Steering Cooler

Something not working right?

by dvanbramer88 » Sun Jul 29, 2012 3:58 pm

Josh's power steering cooler is leaking:

I found the Direct fit part at rock auto for $100 bucks. I also found universal coolers for as low as $20.

My question is, should I just save the money and rig up the universal one and put it in a less vulnerable location? Or should i stick with the OEM design? Also, how important is the power steering cooler? Would it be unreasonable just to remove the cooler and get plugs for the lines?

Well I don't have any intimate knowledge on the necessity of the PS cooler, but I wouldn't ever risk using a "universal" part on my cooling system. If ya got the dough to invest, Mike's rad armor protect it effectivley. And I wouldn't remove the PS cooler, either. That sounds like a disaster in the making; I can't think of any sensors in the PS reseviour, so you wouldn't know if the temp was too high until it was too late.

I'm working on finding a junk yard cooler first. Junk yard TB's are hard to come by around here.

I am looking at upgrading mine... To a universal that will cool better, but, whatever you do, don't remove it!

I could only imagine what that would do...

Its been leaking a significant amount; its really making a mess more than causing a problem - however, I don't want to let it go too long and waste money on fluid, nor do I want to make it worse on a trail somewhere in Jersey or our local spot and be SOL.

For history - the initial damage was from the previous owner - something I was not made aware of at the time of purchase. I imagine, however, I ended up making it worse at Materials when I was doing a climb without the bumper cover a couple of weeks ago. My trip to Centraila must have gotten it to the point of leaking the way it is now.

I've been running a universal one from Summit for about three years now with no problems.

Thanks for the input. Where did you mount it?

Some of the road race fbody guys are using one from bakers percision. it's cheap and it cools fluid that's turnin 11 inch wide tires over and over. I would guess it would probably do the job for cheap.

I bought a 1" x 36" pice of steel, mounted the cooler to that, and bolted it up to something in front of the radiator. I don't remember what it was, but I kn ow it was a solid mount. I also had to extend the lines.

We ended up getting a small aftermarket one. Had to extend the rubber lines. We mounted the cooler in front of the radiator. See Salt's pictures/posts.
