Shaking while in auto 4wd

Something not working right?

by BigBen » Tue Jul 10, 2012 6:37 pm

Since doing my lift I noticed a little shake, mostly while accelerating 30-45mph. After my alignment Firestone said the driveshaft had a small dent/ bend. I thought this was where the shimmy came from. But a few weeks ago I switched into 2wd and noticed the shake wasn't there. Any advice on what this could be?

Front driveshaft, CV shafts, splined disconnect, front diff, transfer case clutches. Are the TC fluid changed religiously every 50K? How's the front diff and TC levels now?

That comment confuses me. So the shake is only in 4WD?

Are you running around in 4WD all the time?

I was thinking the same, JD. He might be one of those who drive in auto4 the whole time...

I forgot that. Constant use of A4WD when not needed will destroy a driveline in a year. It's not like we're a Subaru. :drive:

Advice: Only use 4HI/4LO when offroad. 2wd for all other applications. Never use A4WD.

I had never given it much thought since the only times I'd even been in town to drive it had been during times of bad weather. And the shake only began after the susp lift. In the 17 months I've owned it I've only put 4k mes on it so I have no idea about how the fluids were treated. I've been planning on changing all fluids but things had been real hectic the last few months. Especially since my roommate killed himself. The tb has taken a backseat to finding a new place and trying to help his widow and son.

What kind of lift is it? How tall? Pictures? Did you get it aligned afterwards? Advise changing all fluids as soon as convinient.

**EDIT**
Just looked at your build thread. Wanted to make sure you didnt have one of those crazy lift spacers like our Greek member. Well since it goes away in 2wd, that isolates the gripe to xfer case or fwd. Any of those components that Roadie listed could be the cause. You're going to have to investigate each one and report back your findings. Give a good check to that splined disco, especially.

It's all Marks lift stuff v2.0. I'll probably tear into it around September. Unless I can sell my big truck before then.

I'm tired of being away but jobs up here suck. Need to sell it to buy a house.

More information needed. Go through ALL modes of transfer case operation (try LO after you have determined the speed which it happens in HI, see if the speed is the same or different), try to determine what 4WD settings you see it in, and which you don't. What is the frequency of the vibration? Is it the same as the wheel's rotation? Faster?

Which driveshaft was Firestone talking about? If the front, inspect it for yourself. That may make sense if you only feel the vibration in 4WD modes.

It happens at 30-40mph. I can let off the gas and get back in it and it goes away.

You're still only giving half of the story Ben. Also, try accellerating all the way to 80. See if you have the vibration somewhere between 60-80 too.
