8.6 rear end, How can I tell I got the right one?

Something not working right?

by rob03tb » Fri Jun 15, 2012 7:21 pm

I looked at some of the other posts that talk about the differences between the 8.6 and 8.0. Out side of some minor diff cover differences is there anything else? Part number to look for?
Out side of counting the input revolution to wheel revolution, is there another way to know for sure I'm getting a 3.42 ratio? the axle is already out of the vehicle so I want to make sure I get the correct diff.

by the way, one day they quoted me 250 then 350 another time. they have more than one, if anyone is interested I can give the contact info.

Let's see if these work...

I don't see anything to distinguish, but here are some pics of the 8.6 that may help if somebody will post an 8.0"...

Not sure about tags to tell you but the gear ratio is the ratio between the teeth on the ring gear and the teeth on the pinion. If you really want to be sure you can pop the cover and count

That's perfect, I'll print it out and take it with me tomorrow to the junk yard.

And when you pop the cover to count teeth, you can measure the ring gear. That's all i know...

Axle spline count changed - 28 splines on the 8.0" version. 30 splines on the stronger one.

I struck out. they had nothing but short wheel base TB's. Went to another yard and found an ext with 3.42 but got creamed pretty good and the axle took a hit. But I found this number under one of the ribs that extend from the center section. 40008140. Not sure if this is a part number for the housing only or it includes the entire assy. They had another rear end from an unknown trailblazer with the same number on it, but I left it there because they could not tell me what TB it was from.

From the older posts i know that there must be 8.6 marked in the differential cover! It is visable from outside on the right side of the cover. Easy to see..
As i have received the first time a wrong axle, i have double checked this for the second round!
