Front tires arent doing so good.

Something not working right?

by Mudwheelin » Thu Nov 10, 2011 1:32 am

Seems like the TB is having a rough month so far. So I asked a question a few weeks ago about tire pressure and figured I would run them at 40psi. The ride feels ok...ish. I have 255/75r17 Goodyear sra tires on right now. Prior to them I had 255/70r17 Goodyear silent armors. I had to replace those tires after 3 months of driving on them. I had them from my truck before. They wore out so fast. They had 85% tread when I put them on the TB and lasted 3 months on the front. The rears looked them same as when I put them on originally. So with winter coming up I decided to toss on the Sra's which had about the same tread (85%). The rears look great and the front are looking horrible. They are wearing somewhat evenly but at a very fast rate. They have only been on the truck for about a month. I had the alignment done right after the suspension lift and havent really beatin the truck up this year. Ive read a few threads here but cant figure this out. Is this what happens with our TBs lifted or did the dumb ass who did my alignment not do it properly. I cant afford to buy new tires every 2months lol. Thanks for the help guys.

sounds pretty abnormal to me, is the treadwear rating really low?

a lot of scrub might cause this, do you have really big wheel spacers?

this isn't an inherent issue of a lifted 360

Im sorry. What does scrub mean? I have 1.5"wheel spacers. Id have to check the tire rating. When they were on my truck they were fine and wore evenly.

Scrub is when the tire moves in a way other than it's intended direction of travel.

It sounds like you have a toe issue. Any shaking in the steering wheel at speed?

scrub isn't causing the issue with the normal spacers used.

toe issues would cause some awfully rough vibration while driving.

Thanks for letting me know what that means. I dont really have any vibration in the steering wheel at any speeds. I do notice it when slowing down but I believe thats my rotors.

I'd get another alignment by a different shop.

Ya I was thinking about getting another alignment. I just like making sure Im going down the right path first. I have a one year old daughter so money can be abit tight sometimes. I will see what I can do for another alignment. Not sure what the cost in the states, but here its $200...ouch.

Max around here is about $90, but generally more like $70.

Can you go back to your original alignment shop and ask them about it? It could yield a discount or some other deal.

I could go back to them, but Id rather take it some where with a good rep. A friend of mine is a toyota mechanic. Ill see if he can get me a good deal. So would you bet that its the alignment?

There's not a ton of other things it could be. In general you should have some pretty strong vibrations or at the minimum it should feel like it wanders a bit on the highway.
Even if it's very worn bushings the alignment tech "should" find it.
When you go for the alignment make sure you tell them about the front tires wearing.

I have had toe adjustments way out, with no noticeable effects other than increased tire wear. Basically front tire wear is directly caused by alignment. Worn out components can cause the alignment to be out, but, it really needs rechecked.

Thanks guys! I do actually notice it wander on the highway abit. I didnt mension that before, because I figured that was caused from a lifted vehicle. I will have the alignment done again. I owe you guys one forsure.

The toe being out or in would cause the tire wear and make it a dart around. At least that's been my experience. Your case of wearing out tires in a couple months is pretty extreme though. I'd be interested to see what your alignment settings were before and after.
