Throw everything in a box and ship it to me. I will rebuild it with an AWD sleeve and ship it back to you for the cost of parts + $100.

PM me if you're interested.

I'm going to be orderint an entire disco assy from a Rainier which already has the AWD sleeve in it. So once i get my current one off, we'll see how dirty it is in comparison... I might win already from the breakage. Who knows what the inside looks like.

If i can fit my truck in a box and ship it to you, will you make it a rock crawler for $100?

Please?

That'd be a big box.

I'm tossing around the idea of having people ship me their front diffs (or a core) for me to rebuild, regear and optionally lock.

I've gotten pretty good with setting up gears. Done a few more sets since I did mine and they are all nice and quiet. I'm probably going to pick up a couple extra Toy 3rds and rebuild them to have as spares too.

That sounds like a great idea. BUT i dont know about other users here, but as much as I trust your knowledge, I'd like to increase mine by doing it myself. Not to mention the pride of building my own truck.
Just my opinion.

Totally with you on that. Setting up gears requires some specialty tools that you will pretty much only use to set up gears. I've already made that investment.

Plus you'll have plenty of pride after you muscle that front diff out the top of your engine bay.

Yes, but it's a pain... and if you really should be replacing the carrier bearings when you do anyway, IMO.

unless I'm missing something, that disconnect needs cleaned out well, seals replaced, and then regreased after a careful check of the bearings. I haven't had one apart so I don't know from personal experience.

Micheal, at this point I'd just pull the front diff if you have questions about it and rebuild it. For the $6-$10 for carrier bearings it makes sense to replace them. You'll need a dial indicator, a torque wrench etc to set up the diff. There's hundreds of threads. If this is something you'll do once (set up a diff) then pay someone, if this is something you're going to do multiple times buy the tools and get it done. Set up the diffs for a couple buddies for beer/porno/a few pizzas and you'll break even after less than a dozen. Hell if you can set up the diffs in 3 or 4 guys trucks/cars it'd be worth it just to make fun of their manliness and to write on the diff "extra extra small penis pump inside".

Christian, first step is to take everything apart, clean it very well, and examine each part carefully.

My guess is that you'll need new bearings and an outer seal. You'll need to evaluate the gear bearing surfaces for wear, and replace the fork and syncro with the sleeve.

That parts you mentioned are the parts Im going to replace. Do I need a fork if Im doing the whole AWD thing? Im assuming Id still need the bearings and seals. The gears look good. The fork doesnt even look like it has wear on it(from what I can tell). I also cant get the stupid seal on the side that connects to the cv shaft. I also cant get the bearings out of that side as well.

First off it all needs a good cleaning and then rebuilt. At this point we can't even see if there is anything is wrong with it.

What do you mean you can get the seal or bearings out?

It wont budge... ive tried smacking it with a hammer and flat head. The side that attaches to the oilpan all came out nice and easy. Fish, I dont want to rebuild it with parts I dont need if Im doing the awd sleeve. I know it needs new bearings and the outer seal.

That's the only way to get them out... dowell and a hammer, unless you have access to a bearing puller.

Just work your way around slowly and methodically. It will come out, but it won't come out with one hit, gotta coerce it out.

I tried working around. It wouldnt move. Not sure it you can see it in the pics, but there seems to be some sort or ring stoping them from coming out. Its looks goldish in color. I cant make the ring budge at all either. Ill keep hitting it I guess...
