A/C Heating Issues (Post TECORE)

Something not working right?

by SaltWaterDrinker » Tue Oct 16, 2012 10:39 pm

Hello!

Well post TECORE I found two things wrong with the truck - a chip in my windshield I received driving home, and my A/C Heating system acting funny. Here is what happens:

During the day...I can only get heat no matter what I do (aside from letting the outside air in). During the night time, I get heat or air on demand without issue. When I switch between the two modes I can hear a swooshing sound as it changes from heat to air. During the day and during the night, the A/C compressor ices up wonderfully - it just doesn't get inside the vehicle. This problem arose on the last day of TECORE.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

What are you calling the compressor? If the "bottle" mounted to the fire wall turns into a block of ice, that's bad. It means that the A/C system is low on freon. At night, lower outside temp, the A/C can operate pretty decently. During the heat of the day, it can't function. Just happened to our jeep over the summer.

See...I was just about to counter what I wrote here by saying it works fine today. Its intermittent so there is no way to really figure out what the heck is going on unless someone else has experienced the same.

did it immediately go from working/cooling great and then stop or did it not work quite as well this summer as last summer?

If it were me, I would go to my favorite box store and pick up a can of freon with the gauge find out if I was low on freon.

A disclaimer on the cans of freon, I seem to recall some discussion that the freon with any "sealer" in it is actually bad for your compressor.

It was working wonderfully before TECORE and, on the last day, decided to not work. Then, intermittently, it has cut in and out since then (working fine during the night, but not during the day). Now, this afternoon, I found that it is working fine.

and when it is not working the "bottle" is still showing condensation, dripping water?

Your low pressure switch is going out. It's on the accumulator (the bottle you're talking about) pointed towards the firewall. The connection inside can eventually fail. I've had 5 zip ties on mine holding it together for a couple years. I need to buy a new one.

Now is the switch itself failing? or is it just not opening? Because 3 out of 4 of our cars have that switch jumped with a piece of wire to remedy that problem.

@Josh, I have 3 of those hoses that have a gauge on them.
